Split Architecture from MEP

Is there a document or forum post that explains the steps necessary to split MEP out of a combined Arch+MEP model?  The disciplines are in separate worksets.  It occurs to me that there are likely items hosted to faces (e.g, diffusers, outlets), which maybe need to be hosted to levels (first?).

Intent is to convert a single file into two files (one A, one MEP) which are linked.   I could try it and see what happens, just thought I might not be the first person to do this :).   Not sure if I should be posting in MEP or Architecture forum, but not cross posting as that is probably bad form.

There is no standardized, "one-size-fit-all" procedure to follow to "break up" a model. It depends entirely on how the model was put together.  If the break-up wasn't planned in advance, it's going to be a messy breakup -- especially if kids are involved. By "kids", I mean hosting elements.  For instance, a door or window cannot exist without a host wall. Know what I mean?  So, who gets the kids in the breakup?

Not trying to be funny. The analogy works here.  Really.

I found a procedure in a Hagerman blog post  (not sure how I missed it when I googled initially).   I post it here in case others face this challenge.

That's an excellent contribution, @mdwyerva.  Thanks for sharing it. You ought to mark it as the accepted solution as well.
