Good morning,
Am starting to learn Revit from a solid background in Autocad (architectural) and am used to having a decent inventory of blocks of equipment/appliances I can include into my drawings. I see the predefined families(?) within Revit appear to be rather limited (or could be just me not knowing where stuff is yet). Is there a library of these items for Revit anywhere I can download or do I need to create them as I need them?
Thanks!
Colin
Obviously, you can also visit manufacturer websites directly and search for their BIM content.
In addition to the advise of @ToanDN I would definitely advice to learn to create/modify families. You will find that in many cases the downloaded content will not fit in your workflow. Then you will need to modify them or rebuild them from scratch. (Almost all our families are created in-house.)
Revit families have an extension of .rfa. An internet search of some keywords in combination with .rfa also helps to find content.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.

manufacturers are notorious for over-modeling their families. keep that in mind when downloading. the more detail, the larger the file size. A small file size difference multiplied by the number of times that family is used in the model can add up quickly. Modeling water coming out of a drinking fountain looks cool, but slows a model down.
In my opinion a good way to work with families is to make your own library. You can put in this library your own families or/and families made by others arranging them by categories. As already were said here, there are many overworked families ...their geometry can be simplified by keeping all other important informations .
These libraries are .rvt files that contain collections of .rfa families types arranged by category.
Select an item from the library .rvt file and use Clipboard functions ( Copy/Paste) to transfer the type/types into the current work file.
in the following screenshots you can see some examples of such libraries where you can see the type families :
