Does show wall core only work with plan views and not in 3d views?

what do you mean? you can use bulb icon to select wall core to isolate or right click select all instances and hide in view or create a view template that only shows wall core and apply in other view if needed and see if helps. thanks

Isolate has issues. An I can't just select the cores. 

I'm referring to Visibility graphics. 

There's no way to hide everything but the wall core.

This is not present in 3d views.

Non-Core layers visibility is only applicable for medium/fine floor/ceiling plans for the time being.

That subcategory is useful only when the wall layers are conventionally split IN the Core and Outside the core. However, certain wall types need to have all the layers within the core (including finish layers) which makes that subcategory USELESS

It is possible to do that in a more efficient way using Parts + Filters

• Either to make all non-Core layers invisible based on construction type (Core/Finish)
• OR based on layer index or Material + Construction type if you have more than one layer in the Core and would like to isolate only 1

You might say that is too much work but we have those filters set up in out project template

I agree that it can be useless. I have another filter on this view, so core should be enough. 

That being said, the core/outside core logic of walls, and the layer ordering is often one of the most frustrating/poorly thought out aspects of Revit.  To get all intersections functioning properly for all walls and walls/roofs/floors is often not possible with the categories provided and the categories material layers find themselves often do not match their real world purpose.

Parts are useful and you are using them anyways. I personally prefer using these over that VG option which they added... check the solution for tagging as well as it is somewhat related to this post too

Yeah can't seem to create this. 

I set the view to parts,

I create a filter that:

Applies to Parts

Category construction

does not equal core

I uncheck visibility

The fie was attached to your other port on Tagging...attaching here again. If all the wall layer are in the core, you would need to use either layer index or material ...
