Shared Parameter Issue

Having an issue with a window family not being able to be loaded into a project because of conflicting shared parameters. The error says that the family uses a material parameter "Interior Finish" whereas the project has a text parameter "Interior Finish"

However, neither parameter are in either the project file or the family file.

Thoughts?

Hello @Anonymous,

The problem is that the parameter "Interior Finish" is still in your project and in your family but you don’t see them.

To solve the problem you need the Revit Lookup tool:

Revit 2016: click here

Revit 2017: click here

Problem:

When you add a shared parameter in your family and delete it later the parameter is really gone.

But when you replace a parameter with another parameter then the parameter that is replaced will remain in the family but you don’t see it in the family editor.

Also when you select a Shared parameter from the shared parameter file in the shared parameter dialog box and you click OK and cancel the Parameter Properties dialog box, the parameter is added to your family but is not visible in the Family Types dialog box.

With the Revit Lookup Tool ‘Snoop DB’ you can have a look in the Revit Database of the family.

Under Elements (2015) or SharedParameterElement (2016 en 2017) you will see the parameters with their ID.

Solution:

You can add the shared parameter again into your family and then delete that one or you can select the parameter by his ID and then Delete it in your family.

You can do the same in your project but be aware that if you delete a parameter this way in your project that it will also be deleted in all families in your project that has that parameter in his definition.

So be aware that no family has that parameter before deleting it.

By doing this your project and your family are clean of the "Interior Finish" parameter.

In the Video below I show you what happens when replacing family parameters.

Your Case:

In your case, it is even more strange because also the family parameter types are different.

So you have two parameters with the same name and GUID but different Types.

So someone changed the parameter type of the parameter "Interior Finish" in the shared parameter file.

If you still have the shared parameter file, then check what the Type of parameter "Interior Finish" is.

Find out what the right Type is for the parameter "Interior Finish".

Please let me know if this helped to solve your problem.
