Shared coordinates vs just linked model?

Whats the point of shared coordinates. For one project, we had an architectural model and a linked structural model. This model was placed one time to our grid lines just using the move command and pinning the model. Then every time a new structure model would come in, we would just repath the linked structure model to the new one and it would update in the same location. If this is possible, why use share coordinates? Unless the structure model moves off that grid line it was aligned with, it should always update in the same spot right? I've seen a project with shared coordinates and the model is very slow.

Hello

As a structural engineer I use shared coordinates when I receive model from Architect and adjust coordinates in my model according to coordinates in architectural model. It makes it easier to export IFC and dwg using survey point, especially when project base point was rotated. However, I always have problems when I import dwg from surveyor using shared coordinates. Reason is that object on such dwg er located far from Revit modell and I get error message about it all the time no matter what I do.

Shared coordinates is useful when you manage multiple links bidirectionally.

Example, you have a big site plan with buildings all over it oriented in all different directions.  Each building is a link and is modeled North up but rotated to match the site when loaded in.  You can manually locate and rotate the buildings on the site without shared coordinates but the issue comes when you work on building A file and need to link building B file in for coordination.

Another example from my own project, I linked in a model from a consultant and it was off so I moved it to match our model.  But everytime I reloaded the updated model they sent, it jumped off the place again, pinned or not.  It only stopped doing so when I published the shared coordinates from ours to their model and had them acquire it.

With that said, if manual coordination works for you without issues then carry on.  There are more than one ways to get the job done.
