Selecting which solids to cut with voids

Hi there,

If there are multiple solids intersecting with a void, is there a way to control which solids can be cut with the void and which are left alone?

Thanks

Depends.  Can you provide more specific information?

The attached image has the void cutting 3 solids, the large flat shape and the 2 vertical smaller solids. Currently, the void cuts all 3. I'm wondering if there is a way to control which of the solids the void cuts.

Doesn't look like the void is cutting anything. What are those elements anyways?  Are they resident elements or nested elements? Lots of unanswered questions still.  What's happening exactly? Is Revit erroring out on you?

...typically, when you cut something, you select the element to be cut first, and then the void to cut it with second. Usually, a void cutting one element can cut another element, but a void that is cutting something won't be plainly visible -- but it's selectable nonetheless.  Still, I have no idea if this will work in your specific situation.

It's a face-based family that I'm working with to test the cutting with voids function when I insert it into a project. So while in the family-mode, the voids are not seen to cut anything. But when imported into a project it does (see attached). As you can see all 3 solids are cut with the void. Basically, what I'm enquiring is whether one can control which solids within a void are cut and which are left alone.

No errors.

Thanks.

You want to the family to cut elements in the project? Choose "Cuts with Voids when Loaded" and then cut away in the project using the same procedure you would normally to cut.  Pick the element to be cut and then pick the thing to cut it with.

Yes I have that part figured out. What I'm after is the ability to control which solids within a void are cut by the void and which are left alone.

Please let me know if this is possible.

Thanks.

The answer to your question is: don't use the cut tool on elements you don't want to cut. But somehow, I think there's more behind your question.  Sorry, I'm not getting the gist of it yet.   What has been your experience so far?  You've tested it, right?

...you said: "As you can see all 3 solids are cut with the void." No - they are not. Look again. The void is only cutting the host in the project. The "planks" in the family are not cut in the project. Understandable, since they are not cut in the family.

I have the same problem a bit, maybe i can clarify the problem :leicht_lächelndes_Gesicht:

im trying to make a korean roof, in order to make a divided surface, that dosent stretch the geometri, i need to voidcut a square geometri, rather than modelleing a triangle.

picture 1 - roof model without square geometri (divided surface stretch)

picture 2 - roof model with square form (divided surface is perfect)

picture 3+4 - I try to cut the void cut the black surface, but it cuts both

picture 5 - the goal is to cut the black surface with the yellow void, and the white surface with the blue void. to have  a file geometri like picture 1, with square divided surface.

Picture 6 - Just shows correct divided surface (not relevant)
