Security Device Surface Pattern Override

Out Architectural group decided they wanted to use the Security Device family category to create a family to represent a wall protection system (Crash rails and hand rails and a protective sheet good).

They then wanted to be able to override element in view option to change the surface pattern.

For some reason that's not an option for that family category.  I'm wondering if this is a design flaw or what the reasoning is for not allowing that option in a particular family category?

Seems like a bug.

Thanks in advance.

Never noticed that. No explanation, but I can think of some workarounds. None of them ideal.  What about just re-categorizing the family?

Ya, I have lots of ways to work around it.

So yes I have a work around to the issue.

But doesn't answer the question as to why this particular family category doesn't allow it.

It's like prior 2012 or 2013, you couldn't do a model in place element as a stair, but now you can.

Just weird.

There are a lot of things only the code composers can explain.  In this case, just nest an empty shared generic family in the security family and you can override the security family in project.

Doesn't make any sense to me either, especially since the geometries in these Categories can have a surface pattern assigned to them through their Material.

Maybe @loboarch can provide the logic behind why some Model Categories have Projection/Surface Pattern grayed out.

I do not have any insight on this one.  The team who worked on it disabled it for one reason or another when the category got created.  I don't have any back story on that decision.  Others I do sometimes, but this one is just as much a mystery to me as it is to you.  Frustrierte Smiley
