Section Head - Location between Sheets

I am experiencing 2 different outcomes when editing crop regions of sections. Some files will update the plan section head and others will not. I know that there are cases where this is expected and I will lay those out as I have ruled them out in my testing.

I have reproduced the issues using both the sample file "racadvancedsampleproject.rvt" and a new project from the "Imperial-Architectural Template"

Sample File:

  • Draw a section in a working plan view, it shows in all my sheeted views
  • Edit the crop boundary in the section view
  • Section head updates in the sheet plan views.

New Project from template. Also same results in my Companies template:

  • Draw a section in a working plan view, it shows in all my sheeted views
  • Edit the crop boundary in the section view
  • Section Head doesnt update anywhere

Things I have noticed / ruled out as culprits for the section head not updating.

  • The section heads will not update in any plan where the manual drag controls have been used to change the location of the section head. I started new files so I know for sure that this is not the case.
  • The section heads will not update in the plan in which the section was originally drawn.

What is the expected outcome?

Are there some settings that I am missing that control this behavior?

What happens in your templates?

First of all, what do you mean by "update" Section Head?  Second, you say "edit the crop boundary in the Section View". I assume you mean the Section View created by the Section placed in Plan View.  How is editing the Section View Crop Boundary supposed to affect the Section Head in Plan View?

...the Section Head and Tail are independent of the Section Crop and Extents Bounding Box.

They behave exactly the same in the sample file and any other files, which is changing the section view crop region does not change the length of the section line in a non-cropped view.

I downloaded the sample file from here:

If your sample file behaves differently so please share it here.

Thanks for the help!

@barthbradley - The "update" of the section head is displayed in  the attached video. The section head in plan moves to reflect the left or right edge of the view crop inside the section.

@ToanDN - That is also where I downloaded the sample file to ensure that I was working on the most recent version of it. I do notice that having the plan view "Crop Region" does stop the section head from updating, that was a condition that I was unaware of. Does your section head update in the plan that it was drawn in? Mine does not regardless of crop settings.

In re-testing these conditions I noticed that the section head also will not update if the plan it was drawn in was duplicated from another plan as opposed to created with the View->Create->Plan Views->Floor Plan.

Example: Duplicate Plan 1, draw section in duped plan, updated section crop, section heads move in Plan level 2 but neither of the Level 1 plans.

Interesting phenom. I can replicate. Seems to be related to duplicating an existing view (View Tab=>Plan View=>Floor Plan=>uncheck "do not duplicate an existing view".

No, whether it is a duplicated view or an original view.

If you want to reset the Section line, duplicate the section view (with detailing or as dependent to retain detailing and annotation).  From this point, the section line of the duplicated Section View will update to match the section view crop region.
