is there a reason why when scheduling, the items are unavailable?
I have loaded someone elses model and want for example a list of ducting used but am unable to get this to work. Is it maybe how the part was identified and therefore i am looking for the wrong thing?

Have you just opened the file or linked the file in your own project? If you linked the file then you need to at least set the schedule to include elements from linked files.
If you work in the file directly you will have to check the elements you want in your schedule. See to which category they belong and which relevant (shared/project) parameters are attached to those elements.
From this single screenshot it is completely guessing at this side. The items might be modelled in a different category and it is even possible that it is not native revit file at all (maybe coordination or IFC). It also depends on what type of schedule you are creating.
Maybe you can upload the file so we can have a look what you have?
