Schedule : sorting issue - families

Situation : I want to create a schedule that counts all instances of the same family in each room.

Thus, I create a schedule and sort with "Family" field, then with "Room:Number" field (it also works with "Room:Comments" if it's typed correctly); and I uncheck "Itemize every instance"

Issue : In a room, if all instances of the same family are from different types, Revit display a blank field, instead of the name of the family. (see attached image)

Try sorting by Room:Number first, or just by Room:number.

Hi @brian . Thank you for your reply.

Sorting by "Room:Number" first then by "Family" does not work either. You can try with 2 instances of the same family but with different types placed in the same room : Revit does not display the name of the family in the schedule.

Sorting only by "Room:Number" does not fit my needs, because I want to be able to distinguish different families in the project.

I think you need to sort by "Room:Number" first, and then by "Type", not "Family".

If you use Family, it does not distinguish between the different Types.

... and that's what I want to do!

I don't want to distinguish between types. I want to count all instances of the same families, and write the name of the family in the schedule. But this does not work.

Sorry, I got it now. I just tried it with a window schedule and it works fine.

What family category are you trying to schedule?

I can see it's not working from your attached image. 😉

For example, I can see a blank field on lines corresponding to rooms 107 and 210. I guess in these rooms, you placed windows from the same families but different types. (You can see them by selecting the line, then "Highlight elements in the model".)

In such a situation, I would expect Revit to display the name of the family instead of a blank field.

It is actually working. You can't tell because I'm not itemizing all instances. The blank rows are not what you think, those windows are just not picking up a room. If I itemize all instances I can see that I have more than one type of the same family in some rooms.

What family category are you trying to schedule?

Here is a small piece of the schedule with "itemize all instances" checked.

If you look at my previous image, you'll notice there are (5) instances of the Unit_Fixed family.

Legit issue. As a workaround, you could add a shared parameter to the family and enter the formula value = the family name so that it is not modifiable by edit instance to edit type. Then sort your schedule using that parameter.

@brianand @barthbradley   As I mentioned in my first post, I don't want to itemize all instances, nor sort by Type. Indeed, for large projects, there are often a lot of types and instances : schedule can become really big !

Thank you @ToanDN  for your workaround, it's the only way to solve this issue.

Thank you all for your replies.

Sincerely.
