Same linked model in two Revit files: blue selection frame not appearing in one.

Hello,

I have two Revit 2018 files that I received. When linking in each one the same rvt linked model (with shared coordinates), their "behaviour" is different:

1. In the first file, the blue frame appears when hovering over the linked model with the mouse but not in the second file (and it's not a question of blocking the selection of linked files, the linked model can be selected by clicking on it and turns blue but the blue frame (bounding box) still doesn't appear).

2. In the first file, when selecting the linked file there is an instance property of the linked file named "Linked document". In the second file, this instance property is missing (only Name and Shared Site are being displayed).

3. In the Manage Links, in the case of the first file, in the Saved path only the file name appears, in the second file a longer path is displayed: something like \..\..\..\Folder name\File name.rvt (in both cases, the relative path had been chosen and the linked model was "picked" from the same folder which is not on the network, but on the user's station).

Does anyone know what is this all about ? What could be the parameters as to eliminate the annoying blue frame when hovering over a linked model (the second file case) ? Thank you.

Hi, @ovidiu.suteu, you can't link a model in two revit files opened in the same session. If it is opened in one, in the other it will "unload"; that is because in order to keep relationshipe between models Revit needs to link with one host at a time. When this happen, link will be unloaded from the next model you open with the file linked; in this case it will keep the file path (that is what you see), even you can reload it but will be unloaded from previous file.

Other thing you need to look at is the linking mode (overlay or attachement), both have different behaviors and are used for different puroposes. The annoying blue frame is a link indicator and its functions is to select it as a whole (link elements cannot be taken individually), there is no way to get rid of it. Only if you want to insert link as part of the file and work with elements separately, then use Bind command, but it won't be a link anymore.

Thank you for your answer, but:

1. In Revit, you can open two files which have the same linked model charged. Try it yourself and you will see. Revit unloads the linked file only if you want to open, in parallel, the linked file in itself.

2. Both files have the linked model in "Overlay" mode and, in both cases, the file is not bound. In both cases, the path is set on "Relative".

So, we have two practically identical files each one with the same linked model, behaving differently: one displays the blue box, the other doesn't (for this latter, even if the box doesn't appear when hovering the mouse over, you can select it when clicking on it ).
