Round Timber Column with Space Frame Pin Joint

Good day,

I am looking to model a timber column with a steel space frame pin joint kind of connection like the image attached, but I am not too sure the approach I should take. The idea is that each arm will attach and support the respective triangular beams above.   Can anyone help?

Regards

Jonathan

@slaghuis.jonathan

It is pretty much standard and basic.

  1. Either model it as a generic model (simple sweeps and extrusions)  and nest it into the structural column family
  2. Or model the SF as part of a pattern based structure
  3. Or model the SF as adaptive components, load into a mass and use repeaters

I would go with the first approach and the framing above use a beam system...you should find plenty of youtube tutorials as well as length posts on this forum that cover all of the above mentioned approaches

Thank you for the reply. However, I am still quite new to revit and don't quite understand it. What sort of tutorials should I be looking for that will help explain the first approach.

Have you look into Structure connection? I would start looking into those item first. Once you get familiar with it, you would dive into the complex connection like you have. Attached is a short tutorial how to work with structural and connection.

I would model meat and potatoes of it (e.g. the  web and chord components) via a parametric Truss Family.  You might start off by modifying an OOTB Truss, such as the Warren Truss, which is what I did in this screenshot.  Keep in mind that the top chord will attach to bottom of roof the same way Walls do.
