Dear all,
I've exported a roof, ceiling, and foundation in IFC format. I've checked the ifc file and seen that Revit did exported these solutions correctly, with materials and family etc. However, when I import them again in Revit all these family types lose their materials and Family/Family Type names. If I try using walls or floors or even windows/doors, Revit is able to import materials and family names back, but the same doesn't happen with roofs and ceilings.
Basically, Revit can export the project correctly to IFC, with material information, but it can't import the same project again (materials and family). Is there a way to fix this or is this just a limitation of the software?
Thanks!
Cheers,
Ruben
Dear Ruben,
I tried to open your model But I am Using Revit 2017 So I Couldn't. But i suggest you to follow the Steps As Mentioned Below.
Go to Export -> Options -> IFC Options
So, You'll have an ifc Export Window Opened.
Now Some of your desired categories will have Not Exported In IFC Class Name Column.
Assign the Class Names As Indicated in Attached Snaps.
After That, Export Your Model To IFC With IFC2x3 Extended FM Handover View As Shown In Attached Snap.
After Following the Process You'll Get Your IFC Model With Maximum Details.
Some Elements will be converted in to Generic Category, But if you'll export with FM Handover View Setup, It will show you related family type to identify the element category.
Try It Out And If It Works, Accept it as Solution in order to Help People Facing Simmilar Problems.
Good Luck ![]()

Dear Dharmil,
Thank you very much for your answer. I've checked the window you've mentioned (IFC export option) but all fields were already as in the attached picture. I've exported using the IFC2x3 Extended FM Handover View but it didn't changed anything. It still doesn't import the family and type of roofs/foundations/ceilings. And, without the family/type, I can't view the materials as well.
The problem isn't the export but the import. I've opened the IFC file and I can see it has the family and type information, as well as materials. But when I import again in Revit, it doesn't import that specific information.
By the way, do you know if it is possible to export only a material using IFC? And then import that material using IFC too?
Cheers,
Ruben
Dear Ruben,
I'd Suggest you to review following video In order to get batter understanding to take expected result & Create a Revit model suitable for export to IFC.
