I am confused by something i go in set the work plane in a 3D view i then go to roof by extrusion and no work plane is selected i go to select the work plane again and i just get a beeping noise and it work let me select anything. I am sure its something silly i am missing..

it's not a good way to create roof by extrusion from a 3D view
you should first create from a 2D view (plan view,...) add a section and also a work plan.
Then you have to go to the section view and you can create there your roof by extrusion,
the same dialog box will appear, just select the work plan that you just have been created.
and that's all.
if you do that directly inside a 3D view, it will be not so easy to draw the correct lines that you need to create the profil of your extrusion.
Modeling from a 3D view is not sound practice. Revit prefers that modeling be done off of orthogonal views.
Can you show us an example of the roof you're trying to create? Maybe roof-by-extrusion isn't the best option.
The Roof by extrusion tool expects a vertical work plane. You're going to be extruding something in a horizontal direction, so you obviously need a vertical plane to draw the shape onto. You'll have to create such a plane first, or pick some other existing vertical face on which to draw the shape.
You need a grid line or a named reference plane first. Noted that anonymous reference planes do not work.
Please see the screencast below for creating roof by extrusion
Elevation view is best to work on the profile, since sketching in 3D views may result in sharp angles.

Yeah the problem was i couldn't set a plane i didn't realise i had to click outside of menu on the actual model (me being dumb)
No problem @roscopeco2000 It's all about clicking anyways![]()
