Revit - Window Replacement Issue

Hi Fellow Users,

We have a bit of a persistent issue with some of our projects on Revit and I was wondering if you might have a solution.

The project requires a number of windows to be removed and replaced with windows of the same opening size, except a different type of joinery (more glazing bars etc.)

In the Revit project this requires us to schedule the existing windows for demolition and then replace those with the new type in the proposed phase.

This however gives us an error report saying the instance (existing or new window) is not cutting anything and will remove either the newly placed window, other newly placed windows in the wall and sometimes even the existing windows.

We have exhausted the alternate approaches and a workaround would be quite time consuming for something that should be a very straightforward function of the software. I also can't imagine we are the only ones experiencing this.

I have attached a number of screenshots to give some context around this issue.

Is it a continuous long wall or a short wall segment between each pair of pillars?

It’s a continuous wall, whilst splitting it could work we’d have to split the wall for each window and level (horizontally & vertically) which wouldn’t be feasible as there are too many windows.

Is your Window Family using an Opening Cut or Void Cut? I suspect Void Cut. Try swapping out for an Opening Cut.

just a wild guess? are you using phasing? it could be the walls are existing walls and placing a new window, try to set your phase to show all and see if helps. thanks

The windows are created using void cuts as there is an angled sill that starts partway into the wall. I can separate them and use a rebate/reveal to create that cut, and have the window as an opening cut family. Will let you know how that goes.

I am fairly certain the phasing is not the issue. Whether I choose to demolish the existing windows in the existing or proposed phase, this issue still arises.

Barthbradley was right on the money, the issue laid in the voids that were cut to create the sill as part of the wall.

The alternative approach was to remove the voids from the window family and have a straight opening cut instead. The sill in the wall was created as a separate generic wall based void family.

Now that the voids are removed we can place multiple proposed windows in the same location as their existing counterparts

I am wondering if you can use curtainwall with opening void cut out embedded. Once you have those combo, you wouldn't have the window replacement issue.

While curtain walls probably won't have this issue, they were never an option as they don't show window joinery as well. And this project requires the windows to be detailed at a high level.

You can have both a cut opening and a void in one window family.  Most people will say no you can't but believe it or not, you can.

Inconceivable!

I've always gotten an error message when I try :grinsendes_Gesicht_mit_Schweißperlen:

...but an unattached Void that Cuts with Void when Loaded...well okay.
