Revit will not print to Network plotter

Revit 2017 will not print to the network plotter. Windows prints fine to it outside of Revit, but jobs from Revit never hit the print spooler.

I have been seeing this a lot related to a windows security update...I don't know if that is the case here but it's worth checking :grinsendes_Gesicht_mit_großen_Augen:

That did not work. I uninstalled the update and it is still not printing. Revit will not send it to the spooler.

Hi Alan,

What is your OS and version?  Are you having the issue when printing multiple sheets or even when printing a single sheet from Revit 2017?

A few things you can try...

  • Set your default windows printer to another printer
  • Delete printer drivers and uninstall printer
    • Select Printer in Control Panel/Devices and Printers
    • Click Print Server Properties,
    • On the Drivers tab, Delete all print drivers related to this specific printer
    • Reinstall the printer which should install the appropriate driver
  • Start/Stop spooler
    • From a command line in windows
    • net stop spooler
    • net start spooler

OS is windows 7 pro. Printer drivers and spooler doesn't come into play because revit is not communicating with Windows print spooler. All other applications can print to the plotter including Autocad 2017, but revit will not. This is a fresh install of revit as well.

I think I understand.   Are you using a printer manufacturer specific driver that connects directly to the printer (i.e. OCE driver?)

Do you happen to have Remote desktop or virtual machine involved in the setup/workflow?

It is curious to me that Revit is the only program that is not working correctly,  Are you on the newest service pack for Revit 2017?

I just installed the latest service pack. I can still not print to any network printer in Revit. It will print to USB printer, but not the network printer. There is no virtualization at this site and remote desktop is not being used. Revit 2016 prints to the Plotter just fine and all other network printers. The plotter is a KIP plotter and the drivers are current and correct as all other machines use the same driver and they are printing just fine as is this machine in all other programs except for Revit. It cannot be a driver issue as Windows and other Autodesk products print to it just fine. Only Revit 2017 won't print to it. It doesn't initiate the print spooler unless you print to USB printers. Like I said I can print form inside AutoCad 2017, so the printer is not an issue and neither are drivers. We are not alone in this issue as other have reported the same thing https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles.... I am having to print it to PDF from revit and then send the PDF to the plotter. This is just really aggravating. Going to go back to 2016 if this issue is not resolved sometime soon.

@Anonymous  Hi Alan,  Please IM me and I can connect with you to have a screenshare session/phone call.  Thank you.

If you can post a new journal file to this issue, that would be very helpful.

From an affected computer, use this procedure.

This process will ensure that only the relevant information is recorded in the journal.

  1. Close Revit completely (so that a new session can be started).
  2. Reopen Revit.
  3. Reproduce the issue.
  4. Without closing Revit, collect the latest (highest-numbered) journal file.

Journal files can be found here:

Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\<Product name and release>\Journals

We have this exact issue with Revit 2016

Hello @Anonymous-

This may be caused by using a 'Type 4' Print Driver with Windows 7 x64

Do you have details about the print driver installed?

In Control Panel >Hardware and Sound>Devices and Printers:

Select the printer and click Print Server Properties button on the top of the window

On the drivers Tab look for the printer in question.

This will show the installed printer driver

If the Type is listed as "Type 4" can you try using "Type 3" (if available from printer manufacturer)

This article may be related to this issue.  Please let me know if this helps.

Thanks, it shows to be Type 3.  And I am using Windows 10.

I will pass this info to a coworker who is still using W7 and see if that helps.
