HA! So basically, what you are saying is that since you can't figure it out, you think Autodesk should get rid of it.  Interesting mindset.

Ha... that's funny... educate yourself instead of saying ridiculous things on a public forum perhaps.

Lose your work? How does that happen?

This is why you don't double click on the file. It is bad habit everyone does and they don't realized how often they mess it up. Open the software first and then open the file or drag and drop the file into the program to be safe.

To the OP's defense, the name Revit Viewer is misleading because users can still do everything as a full Revit program, except for saving/syncing.  The only indication is the VIEWER label on the top bar of the program window.  A viewer should not have any editing interface, just a View menu and a stripped down Browser showing only Sheets and Views.

To play a devil's advocate, you can drag the Revit Viewer icon to desktop, rename it, have an intern to open it and do some work.  Then ask the intern to save the work to present to the firm's principals.

In Windows, hit the Windows key and type "Revit Viewer". For each shortcut that appears in the search result, right click and go to the file location. When the folder opens, delete the corresponding shortcut to prevent you from launching Revit in viewer mode for that version.

Then, for each version you've deleted the Revit viewer shortcut, launch the full version Revit. This will ensure that the RVT and RFA associations to the previous Revit Viewer are reset to the full version.

Also, as @syman2000 notes, avoid double clicking on the RVT and RFA files to launch Revit. One of the unintended consequences of file extension association is probably responsible for your problem.

Hope this helps,
