REVIT trim/cut intersecting walls automatically on offset

Hi, 

 

i recently downloaded revit2014 and bought this book by Eric Wing and it states there that REVIT cuts/trims (cleans up corners as stated therein) the intersecting walls after offset. The thing is on my version of REVIT when I offset an external wall and it intersects with the lateral wall, it does not perform this auto corner trim/cut/clean-up!

 

is something wrong with my settings?

#1. The lateral wall must have been joined to the exterior wall in the first place.

 

#2. The lateral wall type must have core and/or finish layers that match the exterior wall in both the Function and the Material columns. Only layers that match up will visually join and clean up.

 

#3. Some walls don't visually clean up in plan view if their base height and top height don't match and fit within the view range settings in a non-inuitive way.

 

#4. You might try using the Modify > Geometry > Wall Joins tool to inspect the offending intersection and see if it offers you choices, if it has the Display option is set to Don't Clean Join, and if the Allow/Disallow Join setting is set to Allow.

thanks for the reply...

 

I used Create Similar from Wall 1A to creat the lateral/horizontal external wall (Wall 1C) then used "ModifyPlace Wall>Draw>Pick lines" to offset Wall 1A creating Wall 1B (See attached image. I believe both wall types are the same (core and finish layers that match) and both are exterior walls in both the Function and the Material and both walls have their base height and top height. (PS: using the Wall Joins on that intersection isn't displaying the box when i mouse over the intersection to inspect it.

 

I'm kinda clueless! Unless what is stated in that book is ummm inaccurate and Revit does not trim/clean such intersections; it is either something is messed up with the settings of my Revit or I am somehow misunderstanding the instructions (although I've read it over 20 times and checked online and cant find any similar article or video!

The picture helps. It appears that everything is functioning normally. Perhaps your book does not offer quite as much detailed, specific info as it could. Although I can't blame the author...the book would be a billion pages long if it explained every last tiny detail.

 

Join - describes the condition of wall intersections that exist (and other things oustide the scope of your complaint) but of course does not automatically extend/trim them to create an intersection.

 

Trim/Extend - causes the length of walls (and some other elements outside the scope of your complaint) to change in order to create intersectins.

 

Clean-up - relates to intersections in regards to the layers of walls (and some other elements outside the scope of your complaint) flowing together without a break when they should.

 

Now lets think about the offset tool. If you have a pair of walls intersecting at 45-degrees as you have, and you offset one of them, the length of the new wall will match the original. Revit cannot know whether you want it to also trim/extend, or in which direction (if you had three walls in a chain for example). If you offset both of the walls to the same side, during one use of the trim/extend tool, only then it will auto-trim or auto-extend (depending on which side you offset to) both of the new walls to create a new intersection appropriately offset from the original.

 

The Create Similar tool basically just turns on the appropriate tool (the Wall tool in this case) and pre-selects the same type. So functionally, it allows you the exact same click-to-place operation as you would expect if you just used the Wall tool to draw the walls. It does not magically know that you want the new wall trimmed or extended. If you want it to create a new intersection, you'll have to start or end or cross the new wall at/with another wall.

 

The clean-up appears to be working fine in every intersection shown in your picture. Each like layer is flowing through each intersection in the way that should be expected by default.

I agree with what you said. I didnt imagine revit would know which part of the wall to trim upon offset but on the picture the author had in reference to the command shows that it got trimed with a note emphasising that Revit auto cleans up corners! Unfortunatley I can past an extract of the page due to copy right. Maybe there is an intermediate clarification step which was missed in the book. Im pretty sure the author is an expert which his 35 years of experiance 🙂 and I missed out on it cause I haven't yet mastered all the tricks
