Revit Surface Pattern export ?

Hi,

is it possible to export a Revit Surface Pattern to IFC, or if not possible in IFC then maybe to another 3d file format like SAT? Currently I'm not seeing it..

RevitRevitIFCIFC

Thanks in advance!

JN

No I am not looking for that. I have already exported to IFC, as you can see from the second image from my first post. But the exported IFC is missing the fill pattern rom Revit. I want to have that.

No, the object was created in a Revit family, and the fill was applied within that family. The Family was then loaded into project. And then exported to IFC. But the IFC is missing the fill pattern / colour... which is what I need.

You might ask "what is this for"? The object is a piece of sheet metal. I am trying to highlight the side of the sheet metal that will be visible after assembly in the building. This is important information for the sheet metal manufacturer.

For patterns to show in 3D, they must be Model Patterns, not Drafting Patterns.

Not sure how "pattern was applied in family" ? As a Material, painted onto a face? If so, check the Material, Surface Patten, and see if it is a Model or Drafting pattern. ( not 100% sure this applies when using patterns in families?)

Did the pattern show in 3D Views in Revit?

Yes it was painted as a Material applied to face.

The pattern I used was 'Diagonal Up' (a Drafting pattern).

Did the pattern show in 3D Views in Revit? Yes.

I tried making a new pattern (model pattern). And using that model pattern in the material.

Still, no result in the IFC export. Pattern does not show 😞

Any other ideas? Your help is much appreciated!

Not 100% sure of this, but I think that patterns are not supported for IFC export from Revit?

I tried making a simple generic model cube, painted on face of it with a material containing a model pattern, loaded into a new .rvt project.

Pattern showed up in revit project. Exported IFC; imported IFC back into Revit. No hatch.

Maybe some IFC experts can weigh in?

Open this IFC in Revit and change to Fine detail and tell me if you can see the surface pattern.  It was export using High Detail settings.

Yes, I can see the pattern when opening the IFC in Revit (picture 1).

But I do not see the pattern when I open the IFC with other IFC viewing programs:

Solibri (Picture 2)

Tekla BIM Sight (Picture 3)

The latter is what I am looking for.

Most manufacturers do not work with Revit, but they can read IFC format. So the pattern information should be stored and visible in the IFC, but not necessary only from within Revit.

I hope this is possible?

Do the external IFC viewers see surface patterns from IFCs created by other programs?

I dont know.. I thought the pattern would be stored in the IFC file and then the IFC viewer could read this. But this was an assumption.
