Revit raytrace rendering: taking too long!!

It seems so strange to me I just don't find anyone else in the web having this problem, it's just me!! I tried to upgrade from Revit 2015 to 2017, only to find out my computers just can't handle the new Raytrace rendering engine. Ok so my computers are not for gamers nor sophisticated at all. One is an HP-AMD A6-7310 2.00 GHz with 8.00 GB RAM, while my other is a Gateway with very similar characteristics. I've used Revit perfectly fine along these years in this sort of gear, including realistic views, shadows, and Mentalray rendering with no problem.

Does this mean Raytrace rendering is only for super high-end computers?  Anyone else experiencing ridiculously slow raytrace rendering times? How did you overcome this situation?

To my knowledge Revit rendering is CPU based so it is likely that your low powered CPU is the problem.

You can compare where your CPU sits relative to others HERE.

As you can see it's quite low compared to the more top end CPU.

One of the big issues you have experienced is that Revit 2015 used a different rendering system which has been removed for the new versions.

Personally I think the new renderer is crap in comparison to the old one and the 3rd party renderers that are available, but Autodesk don't like paying for quality things it would seem.......

What you can try is:

  • Render dialogue box > Settings = Edit
  • Render Quality Settings Dialogue box > Quality Settings = Custom > Light and Material Accuracy = Simplified > Ok > Render

This reduces the amount of calculations the CPU needs to complete so should help speed things up somewhat.

Unfortunately the modern world of Rendering requires a lot of power.

Upgrading your system may be the only option if you want to keep using Revit. (Dont, go use something else, your life will be more enjoyable)

Best of luck

Thanks for your answer Brendan. I'm doing now some tests with the your suggested settings. I'll let you know what happens. Kudos!

I just installed Revit 2018 in the same computer and turns out that rendering works nice and fast!!!! Apparently there was a bug or something in my R2017 installation, I'll never know.

What counts is that now I'm ready and able to keep on rendering within Revit without no additional software.
