Revit Quantification

How good is this program for doing takeoffs for new home construction?  I use Revit for design & presentation only at this time.  where do I start as far as loading libraries, etc.?

Material takeoff is a specific type of schedule in Revit. you can learn more here.

http://help.autodesk.com/view/RVT/2017/ENU/?guid=GUID-F8270A42-CA71-46C7-B145-85EC2CB8E4A1

This will give very accurate quantities for all elements modeled in your project. When building a model you are going to use for a quantity takeoff you need to make sure you understand if it needs to be counted it needs to be modeled. This may affect some workflows if you are not using quantity takeoff features.

The quantity takeoff also depends on your own inputs for pricing etc... Revit will give the quantity very accurately but the actual cost is a different thing that has a lot of variables you will need to account for in making an estimate.

@loboarch

I have a specific questions about QTO that I could not find quick answers to in the online help

As far as material take off goes, what scenarios are not taken into account in MTO schedules:

  • I have heard that with painted objects it depends on which objects you paint it on whether it gets taken into account for MTO?
  • I have heard that materials in wall sweeps are not scheduled in MTO? Is this also the case for other sweeps?
  • We have to do an exact takeoff of wall finishes (gypsum for example). Does revit take into account the wall wraps at ends and openings or is that just a cosmetic thing in plan?
  • How about material that is applied to families / in place families?

We would like to start doing QTO by using the material take off option and we want to make sure we understand the limitations so we can change the way we model things where needed.

Painted objects/surfaces need to be accounted for separately. There is a parameter "as paint" that can be scheduled to account for these, but you may need to make a separate schedule for painted items.

I believe this is true. But you can schedule the length of a wall sweep which is typically how this kind of material is probably priced. You would have a wall sweep type and the overall linear feet of that sweep.

  • We have to do an exact takeoff of wall finishes (gypsum for example). Does Revit take into account the wall wraps at ends and openings or is that just a cosmetic thing in plan?

Revit is not going to take into account wall wraps or wraps at inserts (windows, doors). You would need to add in a factor to account for this if you think it is appropriate.

  • How about material that is applied to families / in place families?

Families and in place families will account for materials in the same way. Quantities are based on category.

We would like to start doing QTO by using the material take off option and we want to make sure we understand the limitations so we can change the way we model things where needed.

Thank you for link.  what about an "AreaBook Library"?  Revit tells me I'm missing library name "AreaBook Library".

That sounds like a missing resource file for a Revit add on. It sounds like something might not have installed or does not have the correct path. I would check the Revit installation and try a repair as well as re-install any add ons you might have.

Hi,

I reloaded and updated Revit 2017. Under Quantification tab still getting "missing library names "Areabook Library", "Roombook Library" and "Buildingbook Library" when I click on the calculate areas. It says to goto Options/file locations/places and add libraries. I have done this but still says it's missing. Any suggestions or answers to this issue?

Roombook is an add-on to Revit. you need to make sure this is installed as well. The add-on installer should be found in your subscription center. Make sure this add in is installed. That is where those libraries come from.  I do not run my Revit install with this add on, so i do not know a whole lot about it, but I do know those are the resource files it is looking for.
