This is a troubling issue that has made itself know while trying to link or import an FBX from Revit 2019.2 into 3dsmax 2018.4. All of the material assignments in the walls, windows, floors....everything, does not come through but instead comes in as a grey material called Phase1. My workaround is to combine by family so I at least have some control in max but every face in each object has an ID of 1. Essentially, to map materials onto these objects, I have to select the object, select all faces, then assign a ID number associated with my material in a multi-material I created. This is way to time consuming. Funny (not really) thing is a found out it does the same thing if I try to send the file over to Unreal Engine. It is like the phasing assignment has overridden all of the materials.

have you try to change setting of your phasing before exported to.fbx? thanks
Funny thing, but not really, but this issue with Revit phases impacting how materials are exported is an issue with almost every third party program. It seems to over ride the native material of the object and then use the actual phase as some sort of overriding grey material. It happens with unreal, 3ds max and enscape. All of them seem to not be able to read the materials when I have the objects set to different phases.
Changing all of the items in a drawing over 3 phases to be on no phase is too time consuming unless someone has another idea how to do that efficiently. I actually think that would resolve the issue. Someone brought up it could be a material override setting relative to the phasing but I have no idea where something like this would be in revit.
Doing more research, I found this link.
If you go to Manage>Phases in Revit, you can see where there are material settings for the default phases of New, Existing, Temporary and Demo in the graphic overrides. However, when I create my own phases under project phases, there is no setting where I can select those phases and alter how a material is applied to the project phase.
Any suggestions? I am sure this is what is causing this problem with the materials.
You could try setting phase filter in 3d view when exporting to none or show complete (no phase overrides new/existing). Or set a new phase filter which has all of those (existing/new/demolish/temporary) set to ByCategory, and set the 3d view filter to that.
I think it probably has to do with a overwritten phase material... You could also try to clear these materials from manage - phases (just remove the text). That's easiest if that works for you.
Your one suggestion solved it. I created a new Phase Filter called 3D SHOW ALL. This allowed my to change all of the all of the 4 default phases to Display By Category. I could not change these in the Default SHOW ALL since 3 of the 4 phases are greyed out.
I really should have thought of this earlier but I really thank you for this suggestion. It saved me time having to do major new material mapping in 3dsmax.
