Revit Performance Question - Why do discontinuous loops slow Revit as much as they do?

when creating multiple discontinuous loops in filled regions for example I find that Revit blue wheels. It is very extreme when I create a matrix or grid of say squares or circles cutout of a filled region. The model runs much faster when I array individual filled regions.
Does anyone know the reason for this? I know it's more of a nerdy question like you get on stack overflow, however it's something I would like to know about in performance details.
