Revit Only

Do most RVT users use only RVT or do you supplement with Autocad or Sketchup?

Thank you.   What is your workflow?  I am hearing mixed stories of some using Revit as an all-in-one, while other use it alongside Sketchup for conceptual modeling and AutoCAD for 2d Drafting.

I use Revit only, well, mostly. AutoCAD is only to to check DWG from consultants, manufacturers, vendors, and legacy drawings for reference. I don't use SketchUp anymore.

most of the building are model in revit , except if tight schedule most of our standard details are in 2D (from autocad) we just link cad them in revit in drafting views. thanks

Revit is a software for construction design and has modules for Architecture, Structure and MEP.

Anyhow, Revit can work in conjunction with other softwares that are used by consulting engineers or other project stakeholders in the BIM process development. These softwares ,usually , are Vertical Applications (focused on one particular industry)

Because Revit has some distance limitations:

  • maximum allowed distance is 20 miles
  • minimum allowed distance is 0.8 mm

you will have to use information that came from other Vertical application Softwares (for instance Civil 3d or Infraworks for large areas design or Inventor for product design-small areas)

Autocad is a Horizontal application (that covers a broad category of design that cross industry boundaries) so its specific files (.dwg) can be used for larger areas as much as for smaller areas (that can not be covered by Revit)

I use AutoCAD files ( as linked) , mainly to get information from the Surveyor engineer (large areas) or small fabricator details for Families(that contain part smaller then 0.8 mm).

As long as Revit Mass module can solve problems that appear in conceptual design, I do not need Sketchup.

Seldom , I use Autodesk Formit in lieu of Sketchup...
