Revit Not Creating Local File from BIM 360 Model

Revit will not create a local file for one of my BIM 360 projects. It opens the central model directly, making it so other users cannot work in this same project. 

 

It just crashed on my computer when another user tried to open the file, and I went to find the local file in my appdata and there wasn't anything there. After I reopened the Revit file i realized it was opening the central model instead of creating a local file, like it should. This is only happening on 1 project.

Is it a workshared project?

 

Is the box checked for create new local?

Hi, jmartucci2,

 

I'm Judy from the Revit support team and I see you've got a problem with one of your BIM 360 cloud models. I'll be happy to help you out with this. I'd like to gather some additional information to start the troubleshooting process:

1. Which version of Revit are you using? 

2. Do all users have all Revit updates for this version installed?

3. Is this a BIM 360 Docs project or a BIM 360 Team project?

4. Are you getting any error messages? If so, can you post a screenshot of the message?

5. Why do you believe that the central model is being opened directly? That should not be possible in BIM 360 as it is when the file is saved on a network server, so I'm wondering what you are experiencing that suggests that the central model is being opened. 

6. When the crash occurred, did you get a Customer Error Report, and did you send it in? If so, can you provide the CER number?

7. Finally, can you please upload the journal from the session where Revit crashed? 

Journal files can be found here:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit 201X\Journals

(NOTE: If you don’t see the AppData folder, you may need to check the Show Hidden Files and Folders button in the Control Panel.)

Journal files have names like journal.0001.txt. Please ignore files with names like  dump.0001.txt or journal.0001.worker1.log.

Hi Judy,

 

Thanks for following up, I'm not sure how, but the issue I had is resolved now and we were able to work in the project with multiple users.

 

I might be wrong in thinking that I wasn't creating a local file,  I couldn't find my local file location but maybe it is saved with a different name (I thought the name of the file would be the name of the project with my username at the end "Project Name_jmartucci2.rvt"  for example).

There is a very good reason for Revit hiding that local file for cloud projects. It's not named in a user friendly way and should not be opened directly, ever.

Agreed, I was trying to find it just to see if I could restore a backup after my model crashed. What is the backup recovery procedure for cloud based workshared models? It was the first time I had a crash in 8 months of using cloud based central models.

Hi, jmartucci2,

I'm glad to hear the initial problem was resolved. Indeed, when opening a cloud workshared model from BIM 360, the Create New Local is grayed out, because in the cloud platform, there is no choice - you can only create a local, and you cannot open the central model directly as you can when the file is saved on a network server. The local copy of the cloud workshared model is saved with an unrecognizable name on your hard drive, and should never be opened directly. Always open the model by first opening Revit and then opening from the list of cloud models, or from the File>Open menu, depending on which version of Revit you are using.

 

Here's the information on Recovery Options for Revit Cloud Workshared models stored on BIM 360. This should help you if you need to recover a backup of your model in the future.

 

It's a good practice to publish your cloud workshared models at least once a week. See Publish Cloud Models for details.
