Revit needs to update the railing and stair systems (among other things)

It's unbelievable that in 2025, we're still stuck with the most cumbersome, un-intuitive, frustrating design tools in Revit.

 

All of us at one point expected the railing tool to create:

  • properly joined handrails
  • glass panels that fit in the corner gaps
  • glass panels that adjusted with the gap between balusters
  • seamless multistory handrails
  • create curved panels

So, when that didn't happen, first thing I did was straight to edit type. I tried hosting another railing to stairs, "spread to fit pattern", adding panels in the corners, experimented with all kinds of joins...nothing worked. After that, what was supposed to be a simple google/youtube search to find a solution ended up with hours of scouring the depths of the internet, only to find dreadful workarounds that requires hours of even more work. Or some that don't even work in all cases.

 

Turns out that the "panels" in Revits railing system are actually BALUSTERS. Yes, the glass "panels" are FIXED WIDTH BALUSTERS. 

 

Don't even get me started on the STAIRS. A simple option to extend the stair geometry would've saved me a bunch of work. Instead I was forced to play with all the settings and handles , and even then Revit wouldn't allow me to get the desired result. LOL.

 

If I wanted to model all of it from scratch, I'd have used Rhino instead. Curtain systems is obviously no substitute for stair railings. And I don't have the time and patience to create new baluster family types for every 1" difference in the railing gaps from multiple projects that I'm dealing with.

I completely get your frustration — the railing and stair tools in Revit are among the most outdated and restrictive systems still around.

What makes it even trickier is that the logic behind railings hasn’t really evolved since it was first introduced — it’s still entirely based on balusters rather than true panel systems, which makes customization painful.

In practice, most teams I’ve worked with end up modeling railings as generic families or adaptive components when precision and continuity are required (especially for glass panels or custom joins). It’s not ideal, but it offers far more control than the native tool can.

It would be great to see Autodesk rebuild this system from the ground up — something parametric, view-independent, and actually aligned with real fabrication logic.

Until then, the “creative workaround” unfortunately remains the standard Revit experience.

This has been a sore spot with me.  At one time (2018 ver) a person was able to adjust the stringer as needed.  Currently ends at the last riser or extends out too far.  There is a work around and make the stringer a railing.  

Some effort does need to be made updating the railing system!

2026 and it's still the most frustrating experience with Revit. 
How hard is it to make a tool that obeys the parameters I set.
Instead, I have to find work arounds and methods that limit other areas of the design.
