Revit model groups associates to wrong level

Hi,

I'm putting a curtain wall in a group on level X, on the associated floor plan X. The curtain wall is based on level X.

When I put it in a group, it associates to level Y, the level below.

Entering the group it shows the curtain wall still on level X.

How is revit deciding how to associate a group with a level?

What is causing this issue and how can I make it work properly?

Are you saying you can't change the reference level?  Got Attached Relationships? Got Nested Groups?

Nope, no and no.

I am in floor plan view of level 11. I have a curtain wall thats based on level 11. Only one curtain wall, nothing else.

I put it inside a group (select it and click create new group).

The group for some reason gets reference level 10. The group origin appears on the level below.

If I select the group it has reference level 10.

If I enter the group and select the curtain wall it has reference level 11.

The exterior wall it cuts is at level 9, so there is no relationship to level 10 at all.

I've done it this way in numerous projects before without any issue so I am stumped.

So, it's Top Constraint is "Unconnected"?

Nope, Top level is on the buildings top level.

One wall for the whole facade as per client requirements.

It also has a custom profile (gable roof)

I'm confused. You're going need to post the file so I can see what's going on. You can post just the Group if you prefer. Save it out of the Project to its own RVT and post that RVT.

I have found this same error when creating plumbing fixtures groups. I found that if I only selected what could be seen from the correct level in a plan view, then edited the created group to add the below grade/floor below piping, it started and remained on the level I wanted.

There must be some elements being associated to the wrong level. One way to find those elements is by deleting the wrong associated level in elevation, there will be a warning message showing you the elements being associated to such level will be deleted. Then you just have to change those elements reference level manually.
