Revit freezes when clicking on a textbox (e.g. Description under Identity) in Material editor dialog in Revit 2022.1.6 and 2023.1.4

Products and versions covered:

Revit 2022.1.6 Revit 2023.1.4

Issue:

When clicking on a textbox control in the material editor dialog, Revit hangs up and stops working. This issue happens to all textbox controls (e.g. Name, Description, Comments, Mark, etc.), which allow users to input texts, in the Material editor dialog.

Causes:

This was introduced by the QT library version upgrade in 2022.1.6 and 2023.1.4, which was to mitigate security vulnerabilities.

Status:

Product team is investigating it and we will update with the information as available.

Thanks,

It's not working fine, see a few posts up where autodesk acknowledge there is a bug in the latest updates (highlighting text in any of the information text fields).

The initial bug report was posted almost 3 months ago, and the material browser for R22 and R23 is still causing freezes, even after an update to correct the issue. I can't even begin to imagine how much work has been (and continues to be) lost across the board. I fully appreciate that there's no malice here and some people at autodesk are probably just as frustrated as we are, but a lot us aren't really feeling like a 'thank you' is in order here...

Could you kindly provide more details about the conditions on how the user run into the freeze issue? Did the issue occur on Revit2022.1.7?

Hi Stephanie,

It is working fine now but it did freeze a few times on Monday.
This is after I had updated to the latest update.
Not sure what cause it but will let you know if it happens again and will note down exactly what happened.

This issue went away after 2023.1.5 update and since today it seems to be back.
To stop Revit from freezing you'll need to rescale te resolution of the screen. But it's often still not possible to change the value of the texts in the material browser.

Do you have any update about this bug (e.g. when we could see update)?

Thank you for idea of workaround. We have same issue in 2023.1.5 and for us it also works when we just simply click into Comments and navigate by Arrow keys. Then we can simply delete and add text without freezing. You just can't highlight text by cursor.

Our office did update to 2022.1.7 and we are still having the same issue trying to modify text on the right side panel of materials.  freezing for over 30min and have to make Revit crash to work again.  No addins installed.

Thanks for reporting this issue to us. Could you provide some details of the freeze conditions? Did you use mouse to click or hover on any texts or just simple type in texts in textbox?

Thank you for providing the details of the problem reproduction. Currently, mouse click to highlight text in material browser will cause Revit freeze is a tracked known issue for us. The team has raised it to the highest level of attention and is working hard to fix it. We will release it as soon as possible. The temporary workaround is:
1.Select all strings in textbox(double click to select some parts of strings) and make copy/paste/edit text actions to avoid the freeze
2.Double click to highlight and select some parts of strings and make copy/paste actions to avoid the freeze.

Just an update, sorry for leaving this for so long had other priorities. I personally have not had any further issues since posting last. I have several versions of Revit (2022 and 2024) but no add-ins as I have lost confidence in adding any in case the problem reappears.
I have a work around if using a material tag where you can edit the identification information for the material without freezing. However, it has not happened since but will be sure to update you if it happens again.

I fixed this for a user by installing the latest Revit 2022 update via "Product Updates" in Autodesk.com.

However, it didn't work for one of my users. They instead used a workaround: If you backspace delete instead of highlight delete, Revit will not crash.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone for the reply's to my message above.

We have been able to workaround the issue by using the keyboard to navigate through the changes instead of using the mouse, as everyone else has said.

So at least there is an easy way around the issue.

When I accidently use mouse to highlight, I am able to unfreeze Revit by opening windows explorer on the monitor that Revit is located, maximizing it, then closing it.

Probably some for of windows problem conflicting with the revit code.

When revit freezes due to this bug, I am able to unfreeze the program by opening windows explorer on the monitor that revit is located, maximize the window, then close the window quickly.

Hi guys, the explorer window thing didn't work for me but it got me thinking (in a panic as to not loose a lot of work)...so I unplugged the hdmi from my second monitor and voila, Revit reset itself and I could save. Good times.

Hope this helps someone!
