Hi there, I have been learing this software which is exciting and daunting at the same time. I Just ran into a funny problem in the course i am taking and i cant find any explination to it so far. I was experimenting with shared parameters and didnt want to mess up any original rfa files. Basically the experiment was creating a door tag that was shared to a specific door type. I used the single flush door rfa. to not corrupt it, i saved as and named it single flush 2 and added the shared parameter. It worked fine, untill i loaded into a model and the only size that would load was the 36" x 84". But when i would load the Original unedited door family it would ask me if i wanted to load all the sizes. My question is, why didnt that stay asscociated with the saved as file? Im sure im missing something as working with revit feels like being the architect to the matrix.

When you load the original family, Revit asks if you want to load all the types because it knows there are more types available that aren't currently loaded in the project.
When you "saved as" and edited the family, Revit only included the types that were loaded at that moment. In your case, it seems only the 36" x 84" type was loaded. Revit doesn't automatically retain all the other types unless you explicitly add them back into the edited family. This strategy helps decrease project size and minimizes the length of the Type Selector list when selecting family types.

A family that displays a dialog to choose sizes/types from is using a Type Catalog. That catalog is a file with the same name as the family (in the same folder with the family) except ending with .TXT instead of RFA. When you renamed the family you need to also copy and rename the associated type catalog file so that Revit will "see/find" it when you load the family into the project.
Also you'll only get the dialog to choose from if you use Load Family or use Reload Family from the right click options while selecting the family name in the project browser.
If you edit the family and reload it into the project that version of the family is a temporary version based on the conditions of the family in the project you used Edit Family in. For example, if you load a family with a type catalog and chose six sizes out of a possible twenty, the project will only have six sizes to choose from. Using Edit Family on that version will open a family that has those six sizes. If you alter that family Revit will likely ask you if you want to overwrite the original family with this new version, you should not do that since the original is intended to use the type catalog to offer you sizes.

thanks, that explains a lot. Its a new and exciting program, but wow i feel like i have all my fingers and toes in different holes trying to keep this boat floating.
If you want a new .rfa with all types included.
Load it to a project, open and edit the family in project, and then save it(to a new .rfa file).
