When you load families into a project, the Revit family library is accessed by default. See HERE for more information.
Once you load a family into a project, it is saved with that project. See HERE to Load and Save Families

as @ennujozlagam suggested make a backup copy of your families to be upgraded into Revit 2018.
I would open (the backup copies) them in Revit 2018 prior to bringing them into my model , simply to confirm they are still functioning as expected.
you may get varying results when upgrading 4 versions at once.
