I have exported my floor plan from Revit to CAD and for the some reason the file size of the CAD export is quite large and I don't know why because its just a 2d drawing and there's no renders or anything, when I pdf the drawing the file size is not even as big but for some reason the cad export file size is quite big. Has anyone experience this before and know what the problem is?
If there are very small details in the floorplan it could be that because of the resolution of the PDF those details are lost and the pdf remains small, a dwg however will most likely export all and could increase the filesize.
Inspect the dwg for such items or try to eliminate the source in the Revit floorplan, by exporting only certain elements (hide other temporary in view and print). It could be as you mention, a family with high detailling (or even a imported dwg detail)

Ps. What filesizes are you taking about between pdf-dwg?
Hi, the pdf is about 3mb and the dwg exports to 25mb so that's a big difference, we also had an area plan which I removed from the drawing sheet to see if it would bring down the size and it brought it down to 9mb so I think the area plan was the issue because revit exports boundary highlighted on the area plan as a big hatch. 9mb is still quite big for a dwg and I think that's because all our walls have a solid fill which Revit exports as a hatch so overall the main issue was too many elements being exported as hatches
Try hiding all the families and exporting the DWG to test the file size. Then unhide the family types one at a time and export to find the culprit by process of elimination. Then see if that family has a detail level that can be turned down, replaced or hidden for the export.
It will almost certainly be a family (or families) with lots of fine detail, which as others have said will all be displayed in the DWG.
You have said there are no hatches, which is good as they are the no. 1 culprit. If the hatch pattern (usually an imported one from a non Autodesk program such as from a landscape designer) contains lots of curves this can create an enormous DWG file size.
