Hi there!
I've hit a bit of a snag with Revit. Our firm has been working on a large model with multiple families and groups, and about a week ago we got out first error related to missing elements. At first this wasn't an issue, since we found a local working file and resaved it and made a new central file, however a week later the problem has rfaced. This time we don't have a local copy to resave from. I've tried following the steps outlined by Autodesk to troubleshoot the problem, but I've had no success. Normally we'd go back to the back up file, however our latest back up is from 5 days ago. We have a deadline for tomorrow, and though most of the work is done, there are a couple of edits we need to make in the revit file giving us the missing elements error. Is there anything else we can do to recover the data in the file? I've also attached a journal text file if that helps. Thank you for your time.
@barthbradley wrote:Have you tried opening the file with "Audit" checked?
Yes, but to no avail. I've done this in three different work computers that had local files, however the problem still persists. I've also tried:
Loading as a group
Linking the file
Detaching from central
I think the problem is linked to one of the families we used, however without being able to open the file, I'm unsure on how to proceed in that regard. Is there a way to remove any families from the revit file that may be causing the error without having to open the project? Regardless, thank you for the suggestion, I'll give the Audit option one more shot.
Have you tried the worksets option? If available, you may try opening the file by specifying not to open specific workset(s)
Hi @Anonymous,
Any one of the following links may help you.
Revit Error: Too many elements missing
"There are too many elements missing in it"
Many missing elements in Revit 2017 or later model
Revit Architecture: This File Cannot Be Opened
@Anonymous in my experience 99.99% of the time these need to be recovered by Autodesk Tech Support. However, one thing I noticed from your journal file is that you don't have the latest update for Revit installed. You're running on the 2018.2 release. Not that I have much hope in that resolving the issue, it's always best to be on the latest release as Autodesk is continuously improving the products.

Hi @Anonymous
Welcome to the Autodesk community!![]()
Sorry to hear that you are having issues with the software!
I see that you are on 2018.2, please install the latest update: Revit 2018.3.1 from your desktop app.
We will need your files for diagnosis and to test further. I can send you a private folder if you prefer.
Let me know - I look forward to your reply update.

Hi there! I know this is a bit late, but working towards the deadline I had missed these replies. Thank you all for your suggestions when dealing with this problem, I've been reading through and some suggestions have been helpful at learning more about the issue to prevent future occurrences. Our current solution though, has been to go back to a past file and model what we needed in it, post processing what we lost in image editing software.
@a_meteni I tried the workset option, however the error still pops up. Regardless, thank you for the suggestion, this is something I hadn't considered.
@PrathapSekar I've gone through some of the links and have tried some of the solutions provided, however I'll keep looking into them since there are some I haven't tried yet. Thank you.
@Matt__W I agree with you, and I wish I could update to the latest version. I'm hesitant of doing this though because the rest of the computers in the office run 2018.2, and it might cause some conflict when collaborating with other users. However, if this is not the case then I'll gladly update to the latest version. Regardless, thank you for the links, I've been reading through them and they've been helpful.
@Viveka_CD Hi! And thank you for the warm welcome.
As stated above, I'm a bit hesitant of making the update, though if it won't cause any issues when working with the rest of my colleagues, then I'll do it in a heartbeat. If possible, what would be the easiest way of sending the file to you? Recovering it would be amazing, since the model has multiple components we've created that were intended to be used in future projects. Thank you.
Hi @Anonymous
Thanks for your detailed responses.
Yes, we would need more files for diagnosis apart from your journal.
look forward to a private upload folder and I will share some instructions on how to extract these files we require.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

A thought, @Anonymous - have you tried to (a) clean up all locals from your machine (b) clean out the TEMP folder? If the locals are from your current project, then I would move them to some other location, on a network space, for instance. Sometimes that has been known to fix this......
You should (or someone at your company should) take responsibility for making sure that when an update is released, that all machines are updated. This is just good practice.
You can't rely on IT. They wont know when the updates happen. It has to be a Cad Person in my opinion. Since your posting, I assume people look to you for the solution for problems - therefor, I would recommend you take this responsibility on.
Hi @Anonymous
Thanks for uploading your Revit file.![]()
Please upload your latest journal and files extracted using the collector utility I've shared with you.
Let me know if you have any questions.

If that is a workshared file....Never open from the recent project icons on the desktop. Always go to File-->Open-->Select the central file and make sure that the "make local" is checked. I disable my desktops on purpose so people don't do this. More than likely your local is too out of date as compared to the central to make it updated.
It is best to always start with a new local file.
@Viveka_CD Thank you so much for your help! I've uploaded the following to the drive:
Revit file
Journal.txt file
GatheredFiles (from the extractor)
Backup file folder
User data zip (from the extractor)
I wasn't able to upload the rest of the data directly to the topic folder 2018.7.2, so it's outside the folder. I've also contacted our IT department and I have the green light to update Revit to 2018.3.1, so that's in process as well. Let me know if you can access these files. Thank you!
@Sahay_R Thank you for this suggestion, it's honestly something I didn't think about. Our temp folder is clean, and I moved the local files from the machine to test it out. The error persisted, however the bottom left bar on the screen showed a larger upload percentage of the file, so it might be closely related to this issue. Regardless, thank you! I'll keep this in mind for the future.
Hi @Anonymous
Thanks for uploading your files to the folder.
I didn't see the files extracted using the collector utility, can you try uploading again?
