Revit educational and commercial versions.

I am a student working as a trainee in Building Design. My question is in regards to working with educational and commercial versions of Revit simultaneously.

On my work computer I have a Revit LT version for commercial projects which is registered to my company, and I have Revit (educational) for my Building Design course which is registered with my student details.

Since downloading Revit (educational), my
commercial files automatically open in Revit (edu) and disregard Revit LT. I have tried to change the default program for .rvt files to Revit LT, however, even after selecting LT for default files they still open in Revit (edu). I would like to avoid the mistake of accidentally saving a commercial project in the educational version of Revit. My understanding is that if this was to happen, my commercial projects would be permanently watermarked with the educational plot stamp.

I realise that I can open files from within LT to avoid this mishap, although our filing system is arranged to open the .rvt directly from the project file icon.

Are there issues with 'cross-saving' revit files with different versions. If so how can I avoid this. I don't want to delete the educational version, as it's functionality and add-ons are much better than LT for my studies.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

You've answered your own question. It's been a long standing steadfast rule of thumb to open files from the program that you want them open in. Especially when more than one version of the program is available.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Just to be clear, the educational version of Revit does not "watermark" projects. It used to print "bands" on the edges of the paper when printing from an educational version, but the banding was only placed there at the time of printing, the actual project never carried any kind of watermarking.

So if saving a commercial project in an educational version, there would be no type of irreversible 'branding' of the file?

Nope. Never has been in Revit. Just the printing bands which are no longer there.

There is technically no difference between an educational license and a commercial license. We are depending on the good will of the students to use the software as intended "for education" and then buy the software once working commercially.
