Revit Dormer Cutting Issue

Good Afternoon,

Looking for some advice on an issue I am encountering when trying to cut a dormer into a mansard roof.

After selecting the extents of the dormer cut, I am faced with the warning message "Dormer Opening Cut is not fully defined. Cut was not performed".

I don't understand why, I am not a new user of Revit and have never come across this before when working with dormers.

I have attached an rvt extract from the project, with the mansard roof to be cut shown in the screen capture below.

I am looking for suggestions/solutions that I can then apply to numerous instances across my project.

Thanks in advanced.

Hello! I've had similar issues when cutting dormers in mansard. I find the easiest way to do it is with a generic model void. Steps below. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your response.

I have for the time being utilised this workaround, but ideally I would like to know why the dormer toll isn't functioning correctly.

FWIW: The Dormer Tool is not available on Roof by Profiles, and from what I see, the Vertical Opening Tool works as I would expect in your Project.  The Vertical Opening is a "shaft" that cuts a vertical hole to through its host. That's exactly what it's doing.  Note that the Vertical Opening does not have a height; it just cuts away whatever host geometry is above it.

In your case, @Anonymous has suggested the best tool for the job, IMO.

Hello, just to expand on the above problem, with the message "Dormer Opening Cut is not fully defined. Cut was not performed." - which I note hasn't been 'solved' per se...

I'm using Revit light 2018.3 and I have attached a screen shot of several views for reference.

I have a similar problem with a dormer (semi-circular in this instance) not cutting a mansard roof. However, in this instance, I have not drawn it as a profiled mansard roof, I have drawn it as two separate elements (hence in the section I have another roof junction issue to resolve... for another time, along with the change in dormer wall profile).

I cannot see that there are any overlaps/ missed junctions in the dormer boundary; I do not think that the proposed out line clashes with the edge of the mansard roof; I have used the dormer roof and surrounding walls to form the cut outline... so I'm now at a loss.

I've tried to edit the mansard roof to include an opening for the dormer, and unsurprisingly I loose the junction with the Dormer. A vertical or in line roof cut won't pick up the curve (I don't think?).

Update:

This morning when I edited the profile of the side walls to my dormer, my dormer cut now works  - it appeared without my doing anything else to it. However, when I try to repeat the process on the two other dormer windows, the same problem occurs - I cannot create the opening.

I would let go the dormer tool and use in-place voids to cut for a more reliable outcome.

Did you use the Dormer Tool for that?  Or, the Vertical Cut Tool?  I can't see it being done with the Dormer.  But, with both methods, I typically miter the three dormer walls and attach their tops and bases before cutting the opening.  But, I still find Dormers a challenge more often than not.

Many thanks Brad - I tried both the Dormer tool and the vertical cut tool and checked the wall attachments. The earlier solution by @ToanDN has worked for my particular circumstance.

I'm glad its not me being daft, but the nature of the complex system.
