Revit Documentation Tools

When oh When is Revit Text tools and formatting going to be revamped???? At the end of the day, what do we ultimately deliver??? You guessed it...Documents....this is probably one of the least liked features of Revit...

No one even tries to format or indent text, anytime you zoom out it re-formats...bummer Smiley Frustrated

And how about a true NO PLOT feature??? Text, line style, Sub Categories built into families (And changing them to white is not a viable solution)....

Yeah, at this rate by the time they finish the new text editor we won't be printing drawings. 😞  Fwiw, I've been told that it is a harder problem than we appreciate because text is deeply ingrained in many parts of the software. Doesn't change the user experience now to hear that or for the last 15 years though.

For the text and zooming issue: always use Zoom to Sheet before editing text.

I've never completely been on board with "no plot", even in AutoCAD. I do understand why people want it but there is usually a better way to deal with the task. For example if you want no plot notes, use a Note family (Detail Items) instead that can be filtered out at print time with a No Plot filter applied to that category with specific (parameter) criteria "no plot". If we are taking full advantage of view templates we can toggle that on or off pretty easily now at plot time.

I prefer to use coordination views for notes that a team needs to review. Those don't get printed at all, just an internal tool. If the notes are more like redlines then the Detail Items approach can work but so could DWF markup process could provide that. The Detail Items can also be scheduled now so you can provide a summary of coordination issues that have been internally observed too. A little planning and setup provides more consistent and reliable results. I realize that's not how everybody looks at it.

I should also mention that large blocks of text like general notes can be created in AutoCAD and linked into to a drafting view in Revit. Over the years both AutoCAD and Revit have become much more tolerant of text coming from AutoCAD. If you use a text style that is based on True Type Fonts (like Revit's default Arial) I find that the fidelity of the formatting I apply in AutoCAD's mtext is pretty good (as good as it looked in AutoCAD) when linked into Revit. I wouldn't call it an ideal workflow but if you've already got the information in AutoCAD (and have access AutoCAD as part of BDS) maybe it saves you the aggravation of dealing with it in Revit, at least for large blocks of text work. I don't know that I'd be motivated to do it this way personally, I'm used to working with around text inside Revit.
