revit crashes when loading families

Hello I am using Revit 2016 with windows 7 pro. When I load a family like a door or window I get this error and Revit crashes.

Same thing happened with Revit 2015 so I loaded 2016.

A serious error has occurred. It is strongly recommended that you use Save As to save your work in a new file before continuing. Revit then stops working and I have to ctrl alt del.

I have tried turning off hardware acceleration updating graphics drivers, reducing resolution etc.

I attach a journal

I have been having the same issue and tried the same methods for fixing it to no avail.  My tower is plenty strong enough meaning the issue can not possibly be due to insufficient resources.

Please help.

One machine in our office has the same issue. We have narrowed it to crashing on loading ANY hosted family in 2016. If someone else loads it in from another computer they are able to manipulate it and use it fine. Crashing just happens when they try to load it in either loading the rfa or loading it in from the family editor.

Had these issues when all the office used 2015 R2 and one user had not updated from 2015 first built.

Running the same Revit Built across the office / project is very important.

This is happens on non-workshared projects as well - with booth ootb and custom families everything local to that one computer. I would think if it was a build issue it would only happen on workshared projects.Does the build that families are created and updated to impact family performance?

All of our Revit users are using the same version of Revit.  (i.e 2016 release 2 update 2)  The problem only seems to be happening with one particular family.  The family in question is a toilet with grab bars.  It doesn't matter what I change about the family, any change causes the project file to crash everytime it is loaded in.  If i make a simple symbolic line in the floor plan view it saves the change just fine.  I can then re-open the family and see the change with no issues.  Only when I try to load it into any revit project does it cause the revit project to crash.  I have tried different versions of revit (2014, 2015, 2016) same issue.  Tried dragging and droping the file in, same issue.  Load family command, same issue.  Load the family into a project that is not a central model, same issue.  Seems to me as though the family was corrupted some how way back.  Our office has been using Revit since 2009. Never had this issue before.  ugh.....

As jdagen explained, it is only one computer that has the issue.

We have uninstalled and reinstalled REVIT thinking it may have been in the install, that did not help.

We turned off the graphic accelerator, that didn't help.

The error message does not give any indication as to how to resolve this.

Even with the fresh reinstall and using the standard familes that are preloaded, any family that is hosted receives this error.

Non hosted families are not an issue (Scratches head).Frustrierter Mann

Im having this issue in 2019. If I load the family to load and close, or to even load, it freezes to the point I have to use task manager to shut Revit down. Its not always the same family or the same Model.

Im in a version 3 years later and this is still an issue with no fix?

Does anyone find a solution for this behavior?

Any solutions yet?

Having same issue, after a coworker worked from home, she has had issues ever since coming back.

Hi,

On my end, the issue appeared due to a problematic add-in, what I did was to move all the add-in files in a backup folder and move them back one by one and try to identify which one is creating problems.

Below the paths where add-ins are installed:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit 2019\AddIns

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins

C:\Users\grosua\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2019

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2019

The solution in my case was: in options - hardware: "use hardware acceleration" was ticked on, and apparently the video card could'nt handle that (NVIDIA Quadro P2000) maybe due to an update.

We've had this issue surface on several workstations in our deployment. In  addition to some of the previously mentioned suggestions, we have determined there are three additional problems we've encountered, some of them are actually known issues and have been documented by Autodesk.

First, try disabling add-ins (as previously suggested) and add them back in one-at-a-time to test which one may be causing the crashes. Keep in mind, add-ins have a deep level of integration with Revit, and that a lot of the add-ins (despite the best efforts of the programmers to test for and resolve bugs) are not going through an exhaustive QA regime before being released to the wild. Plain fact, most are written by individuals with a passion for programming and not by a giant for-profit business with vast amounts of expendable resources to catch and resolve bugs. Obviously even Autodesk itself does not catch every bug in its programs before they're released. Furthermore, Autodesk takes a "hands-off" approach to its add-in marketplace, so you should be treating add-ins as "at-risk" and acknowledge that there are certain risks associated with downloading and installing them in your Revit environment. Best practice, in fact, would be to install them on a "non-production" workstation and test them yourself first, before deploying them to the floor.

Second, it is further best practice to always install Revit versions in chronological order, starting with oldest to newest. Trying to install an older version of Revit on top of newer versions is a KNOWN ISSUE, and may cause problems with previous and subsequent Revit installations. Without getting too technical, Revit relies heavily on installed .NET and C++ redistributable libraries that are bundled with the Revit installations. There are specific versions of these libraries that each version of Revit relies on to function properly. When one of these libraries is newer, or not supported by a particular Revit flavor, then it may crash the program. If you do need to go back and install an older version of Revit, you should probably just scrap your current deployment and start over from scratch, starting with the oldest version installed first, moving your way up to the newest. Alternately, you can try just installing the .NET and C++ libraries for the older version of Revit, but that has a lower likelihood of resolving the issue.

Finally, make sure you have installed the latest hotfixes. Autodesk continues to update its software overtime, including previous releases that catch and fix bugs. (They just released another hotfix for 2019 last month - 3 years after the program's original release!)

Thanks for posting your question to the forum, hope this helps!
