Revit content installation problems

Over the past year, there have been a number of posts related to Revit content installation problems.  Previously, we identified problems with the Autodesk Design Academy and the Autodesk Education Master Suite that would cause this problem.  These issues have been addressed and should no longer be an issue.

Recently, we identified another scenario in which this issue is reproducible with network deployments of both the Premium and Ultimate versions of Building Design Suite 2015 and 2016.  Specifically, BDS 2015 or 2016 deployment images that include Revit and Revit Content Libraries but none of the products that include the Revit Core Engine (Navisworks Simulate, 3ds Max and Showcase in Premium and Navisworks Manage, 3ds Max, Showcase and Inventor in Ultimate) will fail to install Revit content files.  This problem stems from two files, master.rvt.xml and master.xsd, that are missing from the Img\Content\Revit folder. This particular issue can be resolved by copying the missing files from the installation media (located under Content\Revit) to the Img\Content\Revit folder.

However, there are additional reports that are not covered by this scenario and I'm starting this new post to focus our troubleshooting efforts.  For those individuals that have, or continue to, encountered this problem, it would be very helpful if you could answer each of the following questions:

  1. What is the operating system of the machine on which this problem occurs?
  2. Are there any other Autodesk products installed on this system?  If so, which Autodesk products?
  3. Is Revit being installed from physical media (DVD or USB), web installer, download manager, or browser download?  Also, are you installing Revit from an Autodesk suite and if so, which suite?
  4. Does a master.rvt.xml files exists in your <INSTALLATION_MEDIA>\Content\Revit folder?  Please note that the three letter designation between master and xml is derived from the version of Revit you are installing.  As an example, master.rst.xml would be the file name for Revit Structure installations.
  5. Which content packs are you selecting for installation?  To answer this question, expand the Revit Content Libraries product entry on the Configure Installation page.
  6. During the Revit installation, did you receive a Windows Security Alert related to the Akamai NetSession Client?  If so, did you select the Allow Access or Cancel option?
  7. Are you able to download the cab file from this link: http://revit.downloads.autodesk.com/download/2016RVT_RTM/Content/Revit/en/RVT-en-US- i/tmplt.cab?

Additionally, here are some suggestions that may help to ensure the successful installation of Revit content:

  1. Prior to running the Revit installer, install all available Windows updates.
  2. Use the Autodesk Download Manager to acquire the Revit installation media.  This version of the Revit installer contains the Revit content files, which eliminates the need to download these files during the installation process.
  3. On the Configure Installation page, make sure the Revit Content Libraries product entry enabled.  Also, expand the Revit Content Libraries product entry and make sure that at least one content pack is selected.
  4. Run the Revit installation again and if content is still not installed, gather and post the following log files from the Windows temp folder: Autodesk Revit Content Libraries 201X Install.log and cp_install.log.

Hopefully we can gather enough information to identify why many of you have encountered this problem and then produce a solution.

I had same problem with my Revit LT installation!

We have subscription for Autodesk AutoCAD Revit LT Suite 2017.

OS is Windows 7 Pro, with latest updates.

AutoCAD LT installation went smooth without any problem.

Revit LT installation also finish, but after start and activation I've got the message that Path for content libraries is not found!

Installation was directly from the Web (account manager).

I try every solution found on this forum and none worked for me!

But I think I found solution:

From account manager if you change language option from English to English, French, German, Italian, Polish, you will get below install now button, More option button. (see attached photos).

You select option Browser download (slowest) and save as two installation files:

Autodesk_Revit_LT_2017_English_Win_64bit_dlm_001_002.sfx

Autodesk_Revit_LT_2017_English_Win_64bit_dlm_002_002.sfx

After download finish, you Click on first file and after program unpack itself, installation starts and you'll have complete Revit with content libraries.

Before you do all this you should uninstall previuos installation (Revit without content libraries).

Hope this will help! 🙂

We've recently identified a sporadic issue that will result in content not being installed via the Revit LT 2017 web installer. After our investigation, we found that a required content file is not always included in the extracted files and its absence results in the installation bypassing Revit content files. We are investigating the root cause of this problem and hope to have a resolution in place soon. Until then, the following steps will allow you to work around this issue:

  1. From this post, download the Revit_2017_MasterXML.zip file and extract the contents to a local folder.
  2. Download and run the Revit LT 2017 web installer, Revit_LT_2017_G1_Win_64bit_wi_en-US_Setup.exe.
  3. When the initial Autodesk Revit LT dialog is displayed, click Cancel.
  4. Copy the master.rlt.xml file that was extracted in step 1 and paste it into the C:\Autodesk\WI\Autodesk Revit LT 2017\Content\Revit folder.
  5. Launch the Revit LT 2017 installer using the Revit_LT_2017_G1_Win_64bit_wi_en-US_Setup_webinstall.exe that should reside in your Downloads folder or the folder to which the original Revit_LT_2017_G1_Win_64bit_wi_en-US_Setup.exe was downloaded.
  6. Step through the installation and when you get to the product selection page, expand the Revit LT 2017 Content Libraries entry and verify that the list of content packs is populated and at least one of the underlying option is selected.
  7. Collapse the Revit LT 2017 Content Libraries entry and click Install.

At this point, we've only seen this problem occur with the Revit LT 2017 web installer but based on the numerous reports of Revit content installation problems, a similar problem may impact other Revit versions, including previous releases. For this reason, I've attached zip files that contain the master XML files for each version of Revit 2015, 2016, and 2017. Once the appropriate master XML file is extracted and copied to the appropriate ...\Content\Revit folder, the installation of Revit content should complete successfully.

Hi Tony,

The issue I'm having... and I've SCOURED the Knowledge Board... is that File Locations (specifically the Project Template File and the libraries under PLACES won't stick.  I'll set the path location... close Revit and when I reopen Revit... I get that error message..

Capture.JPG

And so that field is empty (as in what I originally put in doesn't stick) and also... under PLACES... there are no libraries listed...

Pretty frustrating... This is only happening on one computer.

Specs

Revit 2016 (network version)

Brand new HP Envy Workstation running Windows10

This particular machine had a similar problem as to what I've described above... but that happened after I installed 2014 Revit AFTER I had already installed 2016 Revit.  I attributed this to the fact I put older version after newer.  I uninstalled both... reinstalled 2014... then followed with 2016... All was well... for about a week... then it reverted (for some unknown reason).

I've tried looking at Revit.ini file under User (vs the Revit.ini file that is on our server that lays out the standards for our users)... and didn't see that the paths were listed in the .ini file  as they were on the network version...

Any insight would be great.

Thanks.
