Revit 3D model from point cloud

Hi,

I will be doing a Revit 3D model of a building from a survey point cloud and I am a bit new to this work. Apparently it can be done in two ways - directly from the point cloud, or from 2D floor plans and elevations that have been done beforehand from the point cloud.

Can it be said that if I want a good and accurate 3D model, the second method is the one to go with - i.e. do 2D floor plans and elevations first?

What do you mean by "2D floor plans and elevations that have been done beforehand from the point cloud"?

I mean the floor plans and elevations that are done by tracing over a point cloud. They are 2D.

Once they are done,  it is much easier to do an accurate 3D model, than doing it directly from the point cloud, isn't it?

If you can have both than it is definitely easier.  We asked our survey consultant to provide both because they own software that can create DWG from Point cloud fairly quickly.   The point cloud is still needed to model the building correctly 3D wise.

Part of the reason we want the DWG is that Revit's handling the graphics of the point cloud is not that great.  Some time I rather view and measure the point cloud in ReCap than in Revit.

Based on your description, I would have to agree.  I mean, it sounds like you are saying the hard part is done, so create your model from the 2D linework.

Thank you both. I asked because I don't have much experience with it and I have a potential client who only needs a 3D model (and not floor plans and elevations too). Many of the walls will be "model in place walls" and I just can't see how they can be modeled directly from the point cloud. If I do the floor plans first, I will have the boundaries of the walls, etc. Then it is just a matter of extruding them.
