Revit 2020 vs. AutoCAD 2020 for Architectural Renderings and 3D Prints

Several years ago I produced architectural renderings of an historic structure using AutoCAD.  I am interested in producing more renderings and some 3d prints.

Are there any advantages to moving my model (.dwg files) to Revit 2020, or should I work with AutoCAD 2020?

You can't just simply "move" your model into Revit.

Rob

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Are you an architect or a 3d modeling rendering artist?

I meant: move the .dwg (geometry) files to Revit and add information re.
colors, materials, etc.

Will I get better end results (i.e., renderings and 3d prints) using
AutoCAD 2020 or Revit 2020?

I am a structural engineer and an AutoCAD instructor. I tried using Revit
years ago, but certain modeling features were not available then; they are
in Revit 2020.

Again, the question is whether I would get better renderings and 3d prints
from AutoCAD 2020 or Revit 2020?

In general, it will be easier in Revit.  Quality of results will depend more on the user than the platform.

Hi @Anonymous

if you are using both AutoCAD and Revit, you probably have an AEC Collection?

if so you could consider exporting FBX from AutoCAD and rendering in 3DS?

Any advantage in rendering in 3DS vs. AutoCAD or Revit?

3ds Max is a professional 3D modeling, animation and rendering application, built for animations, interactive games, and visual effects for the entertainment industry.  Revit is in essence a 3D BIM authoring software, with rendering capabilities.  3DS will give you reflections and glare from the sun.

If you already have a copy of 3DS Max I would start there.  there are plenty of tutorials to get you started.

These days, people are also getting some very impressive results from Gaming engines such as Unity and Unreal, these also work with FBX and many other formats.

Then there are rendering solutions which are built on gaming engines, such as Lumion.  typically the gaming engines you can use for free while solutions like Lumion you will have to buy.

Contrary with what everyone else has suggested, I think you are better off with AutoCAD.  Revit is great for collaborations and producing information packed model.  Its modeling capability is mediocre at best, especially if you are talking about historic buildings.  Revit rendering is also no better than that of AutoCAD.

Thank you to all!
