Revit 2020 - irregular wall shape by model-in-place

Hello Guys,

Option 1: I am modelling an irregular shape wall from component / model-in place then I chose wall from family category and parameters ( as image 1 ). When I applied the material "brick common" both side exterior and interior and topside all changed to "brick material" ( as imaged 2 ), I would need the exterior side to be in brick material and Otherside would be another material, for instance, gypsum wall finish as per the adjacent wall.

Option 2: I did model an irregular shape wall from component / model-in place then I chose generic models from family category and parameters ( as image 3). I can apply different material on any side of the wall but the problem is that if I choose this option. I cannot place a window or door into this generic model wall.

Please share some option or solution. Very much appreciated.

Have you tried paint by surface? This will allows you to have brick on one side and gypsum on the other with in-placed wall.

You could use paint as mentioned above. Not sure what your wall looks like, but you can also model the wall layers by doing several extrusions/sweeps etc. You can then add material (parameter) to each of those, and/or paint...

ps Are you familiar with wall by face option or is it not an option here?

pps it is also possible to do an in-place void cut on a regular wall (cut within edit mode) fwiw...

Why In-Place for these walls? There's nothing particularly "irregular" about them, at least from what I see here.  Why not just model them as System Family Walls?

Another modeling method, would be to apply System Family Walls to a Mass Face. So, instead of modeling an In-Place Wall, model an In-Place Mass and then use Wall by Face to place the Wall.

Hi@johnpen Did you resolve this issue? Still not sure how your wall is irregular really, can you show it better? With a few sections/close-up 3d perhaps?

Hi @syman2000  sorry for my very late reply. I was offline for several days. Thank you for your solution. I initially used paint to surface but It was an error from my end without realizing I was not in sketch mode when I applying paint to the surface that's why it's not working.

Hi @martijn_pater

Very sorry for the late reply. Yes, I used the paint to surface tools for my wall on the interior side. Partition wall in extrusion I used both the paint to surface tools and material and it solved the problem. Thank you.

Wall by face option is not option

Yes I used in-place void cut on my wall openning. thank you again.

Hi @barthbradley

Very sorry for the late reply.  the main house envelope I did it in System Family Walls. Partition wall I modeled it in-place wall extrusion due to irregular wall thickness.  I had used the paint to surface tools and material parameters that solved the issues.

I never tried this method. I will try this and let you know. Thank you for your suggestion.

Hi @barthbradley  Just to say thank you. In-place mass and wall by face works for me and helps a lot.
