Revit 2020 File Menu

Hi all,

I'm running a Revit 2020 install and for some reason, the file tab on the menu will not expand:  when I click on FILE, nothing happens.  Needless to say, this is a little frustrating.  The icons at the top, which are included on that File Menu, do work, but not all of the items in the expanded menu are represented at the top of the screen.

I am also running 2019 on the same machine, and do not have this problem.  Any thoughts?  I"m only running 2020 for a single project that came from a consultant, so the situation isn't really dire, but it is frustrating!

Thanks.

Taylor Davis

Hi @TPDArchitect

I have not come across this issue before, can you confirm that you have the latest version of Revit 2020 installed? Check under the Help Icon (?) and select About Autodesk Revit 2020.

20.0.1.2
20190412_1200(x64)
2020.0.1

Also are you running Windows 10?

It is a known issue that was fixed in one of the updates.

I have not had the problem in 2020 but I did in 2019. The fix was to clear the recent files lists. There is one in the user's AppData/Roaming/Autodesk/Revit... There is another in the .ini file which I cannot remember the file path.

Thanks @TPDArchitect

Have you tried @RobDraw's suggestion re Recent files?

Also, which other versions of Revit do you currently have installed?  If you have versions pre Revit 2017, a clean uninstall of these may help.

There aren't any recent files  - I have only opened this drawing,  and while I have cleared the recent files list from the appdata folder, I'm not sure what ini file is being referred to. . .  I am so not a tech expert, so please forgive my ignorance here.   I have also reinstalled the program twice.  There are no updates available for me.   I cannot access the hardware accelerator menu as it is part of the file menu.  Can't get there.  Anyone else have an idea?  Desperate for a saveas. . . .

Thanks!

Hello,

I work at a community college in the IT department and we are seeing the same issue in our labs. The issue only occurs when logging into the computer using the roaming profile we use for the students. I can log into the same computer using my standard account or my admin account and I have access to the "File" drop-down menu so there seems to be no problem with the version of the software. We did not have this issue with Revit 2019 or 2017. I am curious if the other posters are using a roaming account or if they are on a domain with group policy restrictions?

Hi @cs_techs

Have you seen This?  Not sure if it helps...

Roaming profiles in a networked environment

"It is recommended that Autodesk Revit is installed from the same deployment when installing to multiple computers in a networked environment. This ensures each user's roaming profile is properly initialized when the user logs into different servers.

If a non-deployment install is utilized to configure multiple servers, each user's roaming profile settings are restored to the default values as the user logs into different servers. To resolve this, use these steps:

1. On the first server, locate the file Revit.ini in the folder: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2020\UserDataCache

2. Copy the InstallGUID value. For example: InstallGUID={AC00A40D-0386-400C-82DC-86818C5027F6}

3. On each of the other servers in the network, locate the Revit.ini file and replace the InstallGUID value with the value copied from the first server."

This problem affects all or computers. Revit 2020 menu is not working.

Tested this on multiple machines from windows 7 - 10.

Installed the license services hotfix before revit installation.  latest revit 2020.1 update.

Users with romaing profiles.  Local users accounts(admin and non admin) with no roaming profile.

Tried all the options. Even on clean installed windows 10 machines.

Tried the guid option mentioned in the roaming profile KB.

We are using revit 2016-2019  100+ users.  No problems with older versions.

Uninstalled all plugins/ content.

Removed all plugins from

  • ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins
  • ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2020

The strange thing is that Revit 2020 Viewer  the menu and interface works.

So you would think that it is a license issue.  But the license is issued to the machine by the license servers.

And normally if you do not get a license it doesn't load the interface after the splash screen.

example of interface:

Hello,

Had the same issue, see this link:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/search-result/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Dialog-does-not-appear-i...

A fix in group policy for your users and gpupdate /force should restore the File menu.

I know this might be a novice question, but  I am a sole practitioner/Revit user.  No idea how to edit the group policy. . .  any guidance here would be much appreciated!  Thank you.

Hi Johnny,

Thank you for your response.

The policy is : Disable the setting for "Do not keep history of recently opened documents".

So you are disabling the policy that enforced that history/recently files is NOT remembered.

By Default windows this policy is not configured(history is remembered by default).

So for most people this policy change does not help.

Only when you have explicitly configured this policy before to not keep history (policy enabled).

This change (disabled)will possibly resolve the issue

This didn't resolve the issue for us.

@TPDArchitect

You need to use gpedit.msc. (only available for windows 10 professional and higher)

If you don't have a domain or only using windows 10 home. I don't think this is a fix for your problem.

Only if somebody has configured this policy for your computer before(enabled it). Will this affect your menu.

Hello,

@roelo_dekruijff Apologies, I was mainly replying to @cs_techs as I am in a similar role and the group policy setting was the reason for our issue with accessing the File Menu. You are correct in your statements.

Changing that setting back to not configured (we had it enabled) and force updating group policy fixed the issue for us.

@TPDArchitect Sorry I could not help resolve your issue. Signs point to Recent Files being the issue as far as I can tell, whether through GP or the config.ini previously mentioned.
