Revit 2019 Temporary Dimension Errors

I'm at the Project Lead the Way training for Civil Engineering and Architecture and I keep getting an error that the other participants with older versions (2017 and 2018) are not getting and it comes down to changing temporary dimensions when you select the dimension grips to measure from exterior faces of the wall. Any time I set the grips to measure the exterior face and then attempt to change the dimensions, I get an error that it can't be done.

I've looked up the ID and nothing comes up.  It's making it very difficult and I can only imagine how this will hinder progress in a classroom of 24 kids.

Is there something else I could be missing?

You do not select a dimension grip to change the dimension. You select the actual element and change the temporary/ permanent dimension. Select a dimension only let you change its witness references.

I appreciate your attempt at helping me out, but as I stated:

"Any time I set the grips to measure the exterior face and then attempt to change the dimensions, I get an error that it can't be done."

I've set the grips to measure the exterior faces. I then try to change the dimension value on the dimension. This is when I get the error (as shown in my picture).

If I leave the grips to measure on centers, I can change  the dimensions any way I want. Yes, I could go through and do some math (which I have) to get the measurements correct by subtracting half of the thickness, but the fact still remains, this should not happen.

I don't have that problem.  Maybe try this (though I don't actually need to do it).

After attempting your idea, the dimensions still don't measure to the exterior, even when making the change in the temporary dimension settings. It still places the dimensions on center.

See screencast where I replicated what you said without any issue.

For some reason it's working now even though I did almost the same exact steps as before. the only thing I changed differently was changing the wall type before the temporary dimensions.

I have been teaching Revit for years and came across the same issue when I loaded Revit 2019.

I have seen lots of complaints but no fixes.

Has anyone solved this for Revit 2019?  I'm also a teacher and can't re-position a wall using a temporary dimension aligned with the exterior wall face.

--Have used: generic wall and CMU wall.

--Have reset temp dimension settings to "faces"

--Have reset wall default to align w exterior face.

Like the previous writer, I can make it work with wall center-lines.

Thanks for any advice-temp dims.PNG

The solution displayed in the video actually not a solution and does not reveal any insights!

The error displays when you are changing the temp dimensions by clicking on the grips.  Work around is when modifying the temp dimensions, you have to use tab button on your keyboard while holding the  temp dimension grip with your mouse's left button to move it from centerline to the exterior or interior faces

Autodesk lacks on providing a fix for this major inconvenience issue; instead they release a 2019.2 update with additional feature.

The error occurs when a temporary dimension witness line is set to an Wall: Cut Edge.  It has to be set to a Wall: Reference  even though they are exactly the same location on plan.  To cycle between Wall: Cut Edge and Wall: Reference, use TAB key.

See screencast where I replicate the issue.  Pay attention to the tool tip of the witness line you will see why the error occurs.

You haven't solved anything.  All  you have done is demonstrated how the program should work.  What you fail to understand is that for many people, witness lines are not functioning in 2019 install.  I too am having the same problem and am receiving the same "Can't change dimension segment to this value" error along with witness line malfeasance.  Stop claiming you have solved an issue that you can't even replicate.  This thread is completely unacceptable.

Actually, your post is unacceptable.

And you have a problem with that?

The OP decided that the solution marked worked for them. If you don't like it, start your own thread and then you can mark a solution that works for you.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Start your own topic and share your file so we will see if it's a program issue or something else.
