I absolutely detest the new interface for Revit 2019. Is there anyway to turn off the tabbed/tiled view and revert to the style of interface from previous versions? I hate how I can't overlap windows within the Revit 2019 GUI and how all windows must be sized to all fit within the visible screen at the same time. It also irritates me that if I disengage a window from the Revit GUI that my Windows Task Switcher becomes populated with each window making switching between programs cumbersome and inefficient. Classic case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Hi @Anonymous
Welcome to the Autodesk community! I hear you ![]()
Please try to To reset the Ribbon and Quick Access toolbar
This would reset the Autodesk® Revit® user interface (i.e. the Ribbon, Quick Access Toolbar, and Project Browser) back to the default version and remove any customization that has been applied.
Let me know if this helps!

Yes, I find this incredibly laborious. whether this is having to adjust the way I work - but when you have to operate in up to, if not more than 4 different versions of Revit changing your process is very problematic. We need a way to be able use the previous method of view control in 2019. having a selection of different tabs within each window under tiled views is very troublesome to use.
It was broke. You couldn't easily use dual monitors with Revit. So the point of tearing out the tab is to be able to move the view(s) to another monitor. Not only that, you can full screen that view on that second monitor.
There are certainly Pros for the new Tab Views feature in Revit 2019, HOWEVER, I equally find Cons and INFLEXIBILITY that really need to be looked at by the software development team, as I find it is counter-productive to the BIM program (can we turn hates into loves for the latest Revit 2019!):
- NOT being able to minimise, maximize & free-form the individual windows to the bottom of main program window like previous. YES, you can drag it out from the program & place them in separate monitors BUT you CANNOT merge them back to a single window outside of the program (that is can only stay as single windows). Simple double clicking on the windows in pre-2018 was SO easy to toggle between max or minimized windows, OR simply park away the projects under the main program window.
- The 'Tile Views' ('Tile Windows' in 2018) command will tile them all FIXED equally spaced within the main program window, that is fine but NOT flexible, and WORST WORST for later workflow whereby after user has labourously set the configurations of the tiled views/windows such views/windows settings CANNOT be REMEMBERED by the program when user get back to TAB VIEW and then back again to using 'Tile Views'. Therefore, users need to double/triple or more work to customize the prefered tiled views behaviour. I think the golden command Autodesk should REALLY consider is a new customizable view switch/toggle command (NOT reserved) whereby user can switch between TAB VIEW (maximised) and the TILE VIEWS (customized by users) EASILY. Alternatively, EVEN SIMPLIER is to make Revit program to auto remember the user's customized tiled views/windows behaviour, and do away with a toggle switch command. In that way, the 2019's 'Tile Views' command (fixed tiling window size) can be retained as is. IF this is rectified in coming autodesk fixes the user's normal productivity (or even better) can be put back on track tremendously.
I never write to forum but for this one I wrote with a hope that Autodesk would take the advice, as I find the views management of TAB VIEW feature in 2019 could be a bigger hit if this single most serious drawback I have pointed out be IMPROVISED for millions of users who operate the platform day-in-day-out.
I tried looking around in 2019 API to see if there was anyway to create a tool that could save your view state and be able to restore. Does anyone have any info on if this is possible? Essentially I just need to get the view and its location/size and then be able to restore those values.

hi Viveka_CD,
I would like to further add to my previous honest user's comments & suggestions as I care very much about advancing the efficiencies and NOT seeing the program falters starting in 2019!
- Cons: I find the command 'Tab Views' in 2019 is exactly like maximizing a window to full screen within the main program window and have all views (absolutely ALL) arranged in Tabs as a result. There is NO minimize command other than using the DREADED command 'Tile Views' to reduce the single full screen view down to see other opened views/windows in tile fashion, which actually BREAK UP every single views that are opened (whether or not they are already lengthily customized by user in Tab views within specific smaller view(s)/window(s)). ...OR in whichever directions, it could be the command 'Tab Views' is the one to be blamed for breaking up the view state which forces all views (disregard any exist custom user inputs) to appear in Tab views on top of the maximized view/window hence when going back to 'Tile Views' all views are disassembled altogether. I am very SCARED to use command 'Tile Views' and maybe so 'Tab Views' for this and the reasons I have pointed out in my previous message-6. It makes tackling multiple projects and multi-tasking near impossible.
I love Tab views and it is nothing new in this age but good job in introducing to Revit, and there is still MORE need to be done to harness its functions with Revit interface...nothing comes without a challenge! Why NOT have the best of both worlds (pre-2018’s stellar traditionals PLUS current 2019’s Tab view functions!) to maintain the dynamism of operating such robust platform of age! Here is how it should go as I think it is NOT far-fetched and it is something the program should behave for Revit to maintain as the ideal software leader!
COMMAND SUGGESTIONS for Revit 2019:
Command= 'Tab Views' (current Revit 2019, as of Nov2018)
Command= 'Tab All Views' (my suggested new)
Command= ‘Tile Views’ (current Revit 2019, as of Nov2018)
Command= ‘Tile All Views’ (my suggested new)
Command= ‘Disengage View’ (my suggested new)
Command= ‘Engage view’ (my suggested new)
Hope my explanations make some sense for readers of Revit users, for the pain to be endured by myself using ‘Tab Views’/’Tile Views’ features of Revit 2019. Some may disagree but they are my open suggestions for better platform enhancements.
follow-on...
The reason behind having the commands ‘Disengage View’ and ‘Engage view’ (my suggested new) is to preserve the original 2018’s views/windows docking behaviour in 2019 because as said it is to bring back the goodness of multiple views/windows able to interact dynamically WITHIN the program, with the option of easily disconnect/reconnect ‘disengaged’ views between WITHIN program and OUTSIDE of program in desktop (in another monitor). WHY, WHY, BECAUSE people STILL USE A MONITOR to operate Revit platform. Why the hype/notion in disregarding using a single monitor and being pushed to must-have multiple monitors…..what happen to user needing to bring a laptop to a client’s meeting on-the-go where there is NO multiple monitors to work with. In such instance, a user need to easily deal with the views/windows within the sphere of the maximized program in a single laptop screen/monitor with simple shortcut keys…WITHOUT having the floating views/windows (current 2019) having the TENDENCY to FLOAT OUT OF screen by triple/quadruple etc manually mouse position the views/windows, cumbersome!! |
please..... this interface is no good.
allow me to decide where to put my views......
I strongly agree with this statement. To say that you could not use multiple monitors in 2018 is incorrect. You just stretch the application across both screens and it worked perfect. I could tab all my views and organize them how I wanted to. Now I have less control instead of more.
It is broke differently and in more ways now. Yes, being able to drag a view to a secondary screen is ideal and I love it.. Though to have everything else within the program view to remain similar, with the ability to min/max/pull at one view, without disrupting other tiled views is important for us who value our learned workflows..
To myself, after using Tab Views it all mold and seem to have streamlined well into the everyday workings of Revit. So my previous complaints was I was in love with previous interface, still does.
