Revit 2018.2 fails to launch

Hey everyone, I've just recently installed Revit 2018 and updated it to Revit 2018.2 using the student edition version of it. But whenever I try to launch Revit it never seems to work, the process shuts itself off. I've already tried, deleting all the C++ stuff under programs and feature. I have Maya 2018.2 installed too and I dont know if those two conflict.

I've also tried this below, but it didnt seem to work. My PC is brand new and self built, with the latest motherboard and CPU, I don't know if that information is helpful, but there isn't anything limiting revit to work on my pc.

To correct startup corruption issues, there are a few things to try.
First, empty your temp folder.

  1. Close open programs
  2. Click the WIndows Start button
  3. In the Run box type %TEMP% and press Enter (sometimes large number of temporary files in windows %temp% folder may be the cause - please clean this folder on a periodic basis)
  4. Highlight the contents of the folder
  5. Press [Delete] and confirm
  6. If a message displays indicating a file is in use, click "skip"
  7. When the delete is through, test

I suggest you uninstall the application once again, open Windows Explorer and delete the residual Revit folders, they should be clearly named and reside in these locations:

  • C:\Program Files\Autodesk\
  • C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk\
  • C:\Users\All Users\Autodesk\
  • C:\Users\**YOUR USERID**\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\
  • C:\Users\**YOUR USERID**\AppData\Local\Autodesk\

Please help, I've been trying to solve this for 3 days. And i feel as though im going around in circles uninstalling and installing the file again.

@Anonymous any chance you have Windows 10 (1709) Fall Creators Update installed?? If so, you may need to roll back to a previous Windows update.

I only just recently installed Windows 10 In November, as i was stubborn to keep windows 7 after hearing all the 3D applications seem to not like it. Would it still roll back for me? Its still not launching at all, I've tried more things, like a fresh windows 10 install too, but that doesn't seem to work. Ill try your method out and update you. Thank you.

@Anonymous have a look at this AKN article regarding Win 10 Fall Creators update (can you verify that you have the Win 10 Fall Creators update installed?) and this link (also in the previous link) for Win 10 recovery options.

Hi @Anonymous

Check if Multiple instances of anti-virus software are running, please disable duplicate instances of anti-virus and try launching Revit 2018.2 again.

Can you send us your journal file to troubleshoot further?

(Matt_w - this is just a reply to your post, not having a go at you or your suggestion! it's certainly valid for systems that can roll back! This is directed at Autodesk and the issues caused by failures of Due Diligence; and the very common suggestions to turn off AV software, run users at Admin level, turn off UAC and other highly irresponsible and dangerous practices.)

You may not be able to uninstall the Fall Creators Update if you have just purchased a new PC (as I have just done). The default Windows build on the system is 1709, so you have nothing to fall back to.

What is really unhelpful is that these issues are caused by errors in Autodesk's own installers - they attempt to install outdated Visual C++ 2005 libraries that MS told developers to STOP USING in 2011. Only 7 years ago! Yet these outdated libraries are still present in Autodesk installers, and newer builds of Windows are rightly very strict about security certificates - because these older builds of Visual C++ libraries have security issues! Thus the installs will fail on newer builds.

Asking users to turn off their virus scanners or roll back valid OS updates is just irresponsible - these are not valid ways of dealing with problems caused by a vendors own software. You write software for the Windows environment, so follow the rules for working in that environment!

See this post for details: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/installation-licensing/revit-16-17-amp-18-crashes-after-fall-creators...

and https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/installation-licensing/revit-16-17-amp-18-crashes-after-fall-creators...

and in particular this quote:

"According to the Microsoft security bulliten here:  https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms11-025.aspxthe version of the library that you're distributing was revoked in 2011 and shouldn't have been distributed after that time which is why all of the problems."

(My emphasis.)

Even I read MS security bulletins, and I don't write software for a living! I just deal with the issues caused by other peoples software....

Hi @Anonymous

I'm checking back to see if there is any progress on this issue and if you were able to try the recommendations?

If you still face issues, please send across your journal file.

Looking forward to your reply update.

Sorry there doesn't seem to be any progress with that issue. I've tried downloading it again. Uninstalling My Autodesk Maya just in case if there's any conflict between the two autodesk packages, I've updated and got every installation file that's in the Autodesk App Manager, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the C++ visual packages. But I got no where, I tried to fix it recently but still to no avail.

Im sorry about the late reply.
