Revit 2017 student version crashes if try to edit materials.

I am a drafting instructor.  Both on my own laptop and for my students, the new Revit 2017 student version opens with a message that says 'rendering features disabled."  I dont know if this is related to the fact that every time one tries to edit materials in, for example, a wall assembly, Revit competely crashes.  Has anyone heard anything about this problem in student version Revit 2017?  It does not happen in the fully licensed version at the college.

frankly, sounds like a pathing or permissions issue, but I figure you probably already considered this, being an instructor. How 'bout adding an additional render appearance path? Also, is this issue across the board? In other words: affecting all student versions?

This affects only my own home laptop download and one student's laptop download of Revit 2017. There was no such problem in Revit 2016 for either of us.

I have no idea what a render appearance path is.

I believe that the student already tried unloading and reloading the program which is a lot of work but the same thing happened. I have not tried that myself. I was wondering if it s a known issue with the Revit 2017 student, free dowload.

Application Menu=>Option=>Rendering=>Additional Render Appearance Paths

and, no, I'm not aware of any issue, but I did just Google this:

but, I suspect you already been there; done that.

I was just having this issue with student version and I needed to update the software with the latest service pack. Haven't had the issue since.
