We have a problem with duplicating custom families in Revit 2017.
The message "Cant find'a solution for formulas for Type ..."appears in the project, and it's not possible to duplicate such family.
This error appears only in Revit 2017. The same families in Revit 2016 don't have this problem.
We work with this Revit 2017 build
17.0.501.0
20160720_1515(x64)
Service Pack 2
Look at the formulas when duplicating do you see any values that have changed? Typically that means that a value is changing to something that is impossible to create. Can you attached the family causing the issue?
Nathan,
Thanks for your reply.
I already figured out that the error will not appear in a new project, based on an empty project template.
When I deleted all my project parameters from my current project (not empty) the families works fine without errors.
Maybe it's something with shared parameters in the family, aswell in the project (loaded as project parameters).
Hopefully you can help me out.
Attached are two families. One complex family and one simple family.
Both families give errors when duplicating
Dear Loek,
If I understand the situation correctly you receive the error message as you try to create a new type of family within the project, however the issue seems to relate to specific files as in a new project you don't receive the error message at the same steps.
You may try if you can workaround this situation the way that you create the new duplicted types within the family and load them then to the project.
If you would like that we investigate this situation more, could you please send the appropriate project file as well. I have contated you separately in 1:1 support as well - you could upload the probably larger file there, directly to the case.
Kind regards,

Yes, the problem is somewhere with the shared parameters.
When I start a new empty project without a project template and load these families (or other self created families) into the empty project, there won't appear any duplicate errors.
When I remove the shared parameters in my projects, which are created with our own project template including the shared parameters, the duplicate error appears.
The way we build our projects, families and communication between those with shared parameters, we use already 7 years. Every upgrade to a newer version of Revit, didn't give any errors.
I attached a small project file with a door and window family inside. These families are examples which we can't duplicate in de project.
Solutions such as "Edit family and create a new type" or "Create a new type in de project by right-click the family in the project browser" we already figured out, but that's not the best solution.
Thank you for the file, Loek. In the meantime the case has been investigated and we could reproduce the issue. It seems it relates to formula driven parameters within the family that will require some enhancements.
As workaround you may try to create the duplicated family type within the family instead of the project environment and then you could reload the modified family with the new types into the project.
Kind regards,

Hi Loek,
In the meantime I have published an article about the current findings at this issue in the Autodesk Knowledge Network:
This article will be maintained and updated, so you may follow the uptodate news of this topic.
Kind regards,

Hi @Orsolya.Balazs,
I have the same problem with shared parameters. When I have a shared parameter in the family (with formula, for example I blocked parameter "Manufacturer" to "ABC") and the same parameter in project, I always have this error.
It is very serious, and I hope you solve this problem...

I also have a similar issue and its preventing our office from moving forward to 2017 until this is resolved (which at this point probably means we will skip 2017 and go to 2018 assuming it is resolved by then)
I have narrowed down to the issue occurring when we decide to block our shared text based parameters. Ie. We have a shared text based parameter for all our doors called "Number of door leafs" which we change and block out based on the door family. Ie. "1.5".
The family works when we load it into a blank project however the error occurs when we load in the shared parameter as a project parameter. The text based parameters are also not referenced by any other parameter. (Ie. not part of a formula.). None of these issues exist in 2016 and prior.
We changed temporary our text based parameters (which uses formulas) from type to instance.
I know this is not the solution, but Autodesk will not fix this problem very soon.
So we can not wait for months or year until this problem is fixed.
Hi,
We are a reseller in the Norden Europe and have an a large amount of customers who will experience issues with this bug.
I was really hoping to see that the update 'Revit 2017.1' should fix this error. But it did not.
We have a Tool for Doors that counts the flips of the doors and gives the information rather this is a left or right swinging door. (because standard Revit does not have this function).
The Tool generates a (Shared) Project Parameter called 'OriginalSwingDirection'. This Parameter gives any user of any content the possibility (in the project) to tell how the family was created originally (as a Left or Right swinging door).
We have also our own contents in a library package. These doors are pre-configured with the same text parameter 'OriginalSwingDirection' hardcoded/blocked = "Left".
This means that it won't help to remove the Project Parameter because the Tool will generates a new Project Parameter each time using the Tool.
As the other people in this discussion mentioned, this has been working fine in previous versions of Revit.
Do you have any updates on when we can expect a fix from Autodesk?
(I added a Project with the issue for testing)
Kind Regards,
Matthijs
Hi everyone,
@loekvst, @theis, @Anonymous, @RDAOU, @nathan.chapman and @Orsolya.Balazs
the problem is solved in Revit 2017.2
From Release Notes:
"Corrects an issue which prevented type duplication of families with shared project parameters associated to formula driven family parameters.*"
