Revit 2016 Template File Failed to Open/Tries to Upgrade

It seems our Revit 2016 Template file is corrupt. It's the same template file we have been using for months. This morning, I launched Revit 2016, and went through the toolbar to access our Revit 2016 Template file that is stored on our network to open it for editing. When I did, it said "Failed to open document." Then I tried opening it by going to the file in Windows Explorer and double-clicking on it. When I did, it gave me the "Your model needs to be upgraded from Autodesk Revit 2009 or earlier to Autodesk Revit 2016..." message.

I have not been able to find any help online that addresses this exact problem. I don't even know if there are backup files for RVT files. I'm not sure the best way to proceed. I have a few ideas, but I would like to hear from others first. We are about to start a large new project, so I would like to get the template fixed asap.

A little background, the past couple of weeks, we've been reconfiguring our office causing people to work from different computers while network cables were being run. We've had some minor network issues. Most of them have been resolved. But, I am the only one in the office who works on the Revit templates, and I haven't opened any in several weeks (since before our network issues). I don't know if this is helpful, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Try the following:

1.  Open Revit and Open Template file...

2.  Put a checkmark for Audit in the Open dialog box

3.  This will run an audit check on the template file before opening it

4.  If the file was made originally in 2016, can you try opening the file in Revit 2016 instead of 2017?

5.  The backup files for Revit files are created after each save and are located in the same location as the source file.  They have a naming convention of (same name original file.00x.rvt, where x is 1, 2, 3, etc.)

6.  Can you go to a backup of the template file from IT offline storage?
