Revit 18/19 "checking out"

I have a central model w/ a local file.  is there a way to take the central or local and "check out" to work on it from home?

You can always synchronize, open a new detached copy, save it locally, work on it and then replace the file back into your network later on. The problem is that you'll have to make sure no one else works on the file while you have it with you. Otherwise you'll have to copy the differences into a single file or discard one of them.

Now that I detached a project, worked on it.  How do I re-synchronize the detached file?

You're not supposed to detach it. You work on your local copy after making the appropriate worksets editable.

I had to detach the model to work on it at home and now that I am back in the office, need to re-attach it.

I think what i did was Saveas and created a new central model (archiving the previous model JIC)

Why didn't you follow the directions in the link posted by @loboarch?

Is there any chance that someone else worked in it while you were working on it at home?

Why is there is an 18 and 19?  If the project is in 2018 and you have 2019 at home...there is no way to save your 2019 project back to 2018...just an FYI.

Oops. Good catch.

I totally disregarded that as I read the post. There was no actual mention of versioning.

"18/19" does refer to the different versions but working in one and saving to another.

Revit only goes one way. Once you upgrade to 2019, you can't go back to 2018.
