Reporting parameters and nested familys.... help?

Hi All,

once again i need some help with a family. I've created a frame structure and i need to be able to schedule the amounts of material used once its in a project. I thought i had it working but apparently not. I get no Length or Length report totals no mater what I try.  Yes its labeled as steel frame but the families are just generic models and thats ok for right now for me.

I'll attach the family hopefully there is a simple soloution that i missed.

It is the end of my workday now so I wont be replying until morning.

Thanks ahead of time if anyone can solve it or can let me know what i need to do differently.

You have to use Shared parameters for all the fields you want to report in Project schedule: Length, Width, Height, Flange, Web, Depth, t.  Below is a portion of the schedule.  It reports correctly every piece.

p/s:  I convert the project parameters to shared parameters manually so when I loaded to the host family, some constraints broke.  But they can be fixed easily by re-nesting the parameters.

By the way, what are the purposes of those reporting parameters?  I don't see them being useful for what you are doing.

huh...I just wanted the length to report and that schedule field just stayed empty....

I just need the lengths of pieces so that the welding shop has accurate drawings and info for building the frames that our house are built on. I made a few reporting parameters hoping that would allow me to schedule the separate lengths but that didnt work either.

on second thought maybe what you're showing there isnt the solved problem.

See i need the length of the separate pieces.. this is what my schedule looks like. Its not finished yet as i need to add a few calculated parameters but as you can see the 2 columns on the end are blank. This is where the individual length of each piece SHOULD be yet its empty.

I know i am no pro when it comes to families as i am completely self taught with these things so you guys are being a great help in learning more. Also if you'd know of any great online courses for learning about families and how to better create them that would probably help out alot.

Again, open the rod, angle, and flatbar families and replace any parameters you want to report in the schedule with shared parameters.

The sample schedule in my post shows every pieces. But I grouped all the identical pieces with exact information into one row with the quantity (see Count column). If you want to show every piece as one row juat don't group them. But I would advise against that.

Thanks, i got it. I misread a piece from your first comment and then i reread it a few minutes ago and realized what i had done wrong.

I've got it working now.

Thanks again.
