I have a large acoustical ceiling area where we used the out-of-the-box 2x4 Troffer Parabolic light fixture, but would now like to change all those lights to a specific manufacturer’s fixture. I thought it would be easy to do so by selecting all the original lights, go to the properties browser, and click on the new fixture. When I do that however I get the error message that ‘Can’t use this type in this host’. If both lights were easily placed in the ceiling, why can’t they be switched out?
If what I want to do can’t be done, what’s the best way to change all the lights to a different fixture other than redoing everything?
In the image below, #1 is the OOTB Troffer, and #2 is the manufacturer’s fixture. I have also included a RVT file if anyone could please take a look. Also, why doesn't;t the manufacturer's fixture move with the grid like the Troffer does?

I did not open your file so pardon me if I am wrong. The OOTB architectural light fixture is ceiling based, manufacturers' fixture are most likely face based (same as OOTB electrical light fixture). You can not swap them.
A workaround is nest the manufacturer fixture into the OOTB fixture as shared family, and delete the OOTB model.
You have probably families which host in different ways. One might be ceiling based an other might be face based. One can not be replaced by the other.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.
One does not really need to remodel anything...One can use Copy/Monitor tool in order to convert all current ceiling based fixtures into Face based Fixters.
The Troffer fixtures which are now in the Model are face based which one could basically replace with another face based family
I will add a screencast shortly...sounds like a Long process but takes actually 3-4 mins
EDIT: Or ask your supplier to send you a ceiling based fixture lol Easiest Thing to do.

Thanks to all on this! I am not sure why they would make a recessed ceiling fixture face based as opposed to ceiling based since both are intended to be recessed into a ceiling
There is nothing wrong with face based fixture even when recessed...Simply said; they are more like the Master Key Version of lighting fixtures (Not everyone uses Ceiling tool to model a suspended ceiling but whatever one models surely has a face)
If you want to save yourself the Trouble..bounce back to the supplier and ask them to provide a ceiling based...If you are willing to Change the OOTB one to face based so you may be able to replace them with those from the supplier...it is quite easy and below is the screencast for the steps given above
Cheers

I love the "thinking out of the box"!
Will definitely watch your screencast !

Thank you RDAOU, but this is definitely beyond my level of understanding at this point. I will need to view it a number of times and understand what Copy Monitor is.

The copy comes in face based...thats a Feature of copy Monitor since 2011 onward. The catch is more in changing/re-placing all the elements in the Project in one go instead of remodeling and re-placing the old ones 1 at a time. (the time before Dynamo existed)
Attached is the .rvt used in the cast. and the OOTB Family which was ceiling based now face.
